A single-piston scaler (also called a needle scaler or pneumatic scaler) is an air-powered surface preparation tool that uses a reciprocating piston to deliver rapid impact blows to a bundle of needles or a chisel tip, removing rust, paint, slag, scale, or other coatings from metal or concrete surfaces. The single piston design means that there is one pneumatic piston drives the impact mechanism. It is simpler and more compact than multi-piston (e.g., triple-piston) designs. It is often lighter, easier to maintain, and better suited for small to medium-duty cleaning tasks.
Design:
- Piston & Cylinder Assembly: A single reciprocating steel piston moves back and forth under air pressure. Each stroke delivers an impact to the chisel or needle holder.
- Valve System: Directs compressed air alternately to each side of the piston for continuous reciprocation.
- Needle Holder or Chisel Attachment: Connects to the piston front end; can hold multiple hardened steel needles or a single chisel.
- Body/Housing: Cylindrical aluminum or steel casing enclosing the piston, designed to withstand repeated impacts.
- Trigger & Throttle Valve: Controls air flow from the inlet; regulates power.
- Air Inlet & Exhaust: Typically ¼” NPT air inlet; exhaust may be front, rear, or through the handle, with built-in mufflers for noise reduction.
- Optional Accessories: Chisel attachments, needle sets (1/8″ or 1/16″), quick-change retainers.
Applications: Single-piston scalers are used wherever impact surface cleaning is needed, especially in marine, construction, and fabrication industries.
