Manual Drive Caps
A manual drive cap is the cheapest insurance on a fence line: it seats over the post, rod, or pipe and takes the sledge blow so the post top does not mushroom, split, or crush. Three styles cover most hand driving — the 2-1/2 in. cup cap cradles round pipe and post, the 1-1/2 in. pin cap centers the blow on rod and small stock, and the 1-1/2 in. square cap with a 3-1/2 in. OD collar holds square post from twisting. All three are struck with a sledge or maul, no air or hydraulics. Cup, Pin, or Square
Pick by what the top of the post looks like. A cup-shaped head fits over round pipe and post and spreads the impact around the rim — the right choice for open-ended stock that would otherwise roll over. The pin style drives a more direct, centered blow, which suits rods, stakes, and small solid stock where alignment matters more than surface area. The square cap has a machined square recess and a collar that keeps a square post from twisting under the hammer.
Where Manual Caps Earn Their Keep
Light fence, sign, marker post, and ground rod work, punch-list repairs, and any job where hauling a compressor or power pack costs more than the post line is worth. Common Questions
What is a driving cap? A hardened steel cap that sits between the hammer and the post. It absorbs and spreads the blow so the force travels down the post centerline instead of deforming the top — a mushroomed post end will not take a fitting, a cap, or a puller later.
What is the difference between a drive cup and a drive cap? The cup is one style of cap. Cup means the recess is round and cradles pipe or round post; pin and square are the other two profiles in this group. All three are manual drive caps.
Can I use one on a powered post driver? No. These are struck by hand. Powered drivers take their own chucks and caps — see the post driving accessories section, sorted by driver series.
