Cutting pavement: the asphalt cutter is the all-around blade for scoring and cutting asphalt, while the wide tarmac cutter and keen kut blade make long clean cuts under heavier 60–90 lb breakers, and the asphalt wedge lifts cut sections. Digging: 5-1/2 in. and 4-1/2 in. clay spades and the digging chisel excavate clay, hardpan, and trench walls. Frozen ground and demolition: the frost wedge (12 and 17-1/2 in.) opens frozen ground, the concrete buster (14-1/2 and 36 in.) breaks slab, and the brick removing tool pops brick and block. Surface prep: the bushing tool textures and levels concrete. Rock splitting: plug-and-feathers shanks with matching feathers split stone from 1-1/2 and 2 in. drilled holes.

Matching Blade, Breaker, and Job
Wider blades move more material but need more breaker behind them — run the 5-1/2 in. spade and the wide cutters on 60–90 lb machines, and step down to the 4-1/2 in. spade or asphalt cutter on 30–40 lb breakers and harder ground. Common Questions
What is the difference between a clay spade and a digging chisel? The spade’s wide curved blade lifts and moves soil; the digging chisel is narrower and penetrates compacted ground the spade would skate over. Crews digging mixed ground usually carry both.
How do plug and feathers split rock? Drill a 1-1/2 or 2 in. hole, insert the two feathers, then drive the plug between them with the breaker — the expanding wedge action splits stone and concrete along the hole line without flying debris.
