Tampers & Rammers

Tampers and rammers compact material by driving a foot straight down at high frequency, and the two families here do very different jobs. Backfill tampers and air tampers pack soil in trenches, around pipe, and at footings where a plate compactor cannot reach — the CP 0035 and APT 131 among them. Bench and sand rammers ram molding sand in a foundry or shop, from the small Tamco/Toku bench models up to the Texas Pneumatic TX70B sand rammer. Both families are pneumatic and run off shop or jobsite compressed air. New to sizing one? Start with our tampers buyer’s guide.

Backfill Tampers and Air Tampers

Trench work. A narrow foot driven straight down at high frequency packs soil around pipe, at footings, and in cuts too tight for a walk-behind plate. The Chicago Pneumatic 0003 and the Tamco/Toku JET-06 sit in that range. Shop the full range by maker at Chicago Pneumatic, APT, Texas Pneumatic, and Toku.

Bench and Sand Rammers

Foundry and shop work. Sand rammers pack molding sand into a flask so a casting holds its shape, and bench rammers do the same at a bench with a lighter tool. The Tamco/Toku 0BR and the Texas Pneumatic TX00 bracket the range. Also see CP sand rammers and the Toku bench rammer line.

Track and Tie Tamping

Ballast under a crosstie is a third kind of compaction, and it takes a purpose-built machine rather than a trench tamper. Rail tampers such as the Atlas Copco Cobra TT are self-contained gas units built to work a track gang, and breaker-shank tie tamping tools cover occasional spot work.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a tamper and a rammer? On this site, tampers are the soil compaction tools used in trenches and around pipe, and rammers are the smaller foundry tools that pack casting sand. Both are pneumatic and both work by high-frequency vertical impact, but the feet, weights, and jobs are different.

What size air compressor runs a pneumatic tamper? Check the rated air consumption on the model you want and pick a compressor that sustains it with headroom, not one that only meets it. Each product page lists the figure, and the buyer’s guide walks through sizing.

Which rammer is used for casting sand? A bench or sand rammer, not a backfill tamper. Texas Pneumatic and Toku both build dedicated foundry rammers — see Texas Pneumatic sand rammers.

Can a jackhammer be used as a tamper? For spot work, yes. A dirt tamp or tie tamping tool in a breaker chuck turns a paving breaker into a tamper — see paving breaker driving tools, which include dirt tamps and tie tamping tools in standard breaker chucks. For production compaction, use a purpose-built tamper instead.
