Start a cut with the moil point, steer it with a narrow chisel, shear heads flush using the side cut chisel, drive the shank out with a punch sized for 3/8 to 7/8 in. rivets, and tear plate, timber, and frozen ground with the ripper. 11X Jumbo Shank Fitment
Rivet buster steel is its own size class. The .866 in. jumbo (11X) shank is bigger than any breaker shank and far bigger than chipping steel, so nothing crosses over — a 1-1/4 x 6 in. breaker point will not chuck in a rivet buster, and 11X steel will not go in a chipping hammer. Working the Steel in Order
Structural teardown follows a sequence. Shear the head off the rivet with the side cut chisel, then drive the remaining shank through with the punch sized to it. Move to the narrow chisel to cut plate and open the joint, and bring in the ripper where sheet, timber, or decking has to come apart. On concrete and masonry the moil point opens the break first and the wide chisels clear what is left.
Wear Parts and Steel Life
The lower split bushing guides the tool and holds the shank in line; the wide chisels and the bushing tool are built to run with one, and a worn bushing chews up the front end. Coat shanks with Breakerolene steel paste and retire any tool whose struck end has mushroomed.
Common Questions
What bits fit a rivet buster? Any steel cut to the .866 in. jumbo (11X) shank — moil points, narrow and side cut chisels, rippers, punches, blanks, and the wide 2 and 3 in. chisels. Breaker and chipping steel will not fit. Match the steel to your tool on the pneumatic rivet buster page.
What is the difference between a rivet buster chisel and a jack hammer bit? Shank and duty. Rivet buster chisels are 11X jumbo and made to shear steel and rivets; breaker blade tools and points use 7/8 to 1-1/4 in. hex shanks and are made to break concrete and pavement.
Do I need a lower split bushing? For the 2 in. chisel, 3 in. chisel, and jumbo bushing, yes — each is listed as requiring one. The split bushing is a wear part, and its split design makes swapping it out quick when it goes.
Where do I find rivet buster parts? Lock springs, sleeves, bumpers, and repair kits are listed with the exploded views in parts & diagrams. Have the tool make and model handy, since the small and jumbo frames use different sleeves. Everything ships from Denver.
