Start With the Job, Not the Catalog

A post driver is a handheld or machine-mounted impact tool that drives posts, pipe, rod and pile into the ground by delivering hundreds of rapid hammer blows to the top of the post – replacing a manual sledge or slide hammer, and letting one person set posts in soil, gravel and frozen ground.

Fence line – T-post & round

Ag, ranch, residential and temporary fence, in soil or frozen ground.

Straight answer: Ranch Pro for T-post and 1-5/8 in; Fence Pro if you run round posts to 2-3/8 in.

Ground rods – utility

Driving 1/2 in and 3/4 in copper ground rod below grade, no ladder.

What are you driving?

The post – its shape and outside dimension – sets the chuck, and the chuck sets the driver. Get this right and everything else follows.

How the tool works

How a Post Driver Works

Every Rhino driver, whatever the power source, does the same thing: convert power into a fast, repeating hammer blow delivered straight down the axis of the post.

The operating cycle

Power drives the hammer upThe Honda GX35 engine (or air / hydraulic flow) turns a connecting rod that lifts a steel hammer inside the body assembly.
The hammer fires downThe hammer reverses and accelerates down the bore – 900 to 1,720 times a minute depending on the model.
The anvil takes the blowThe hammer strikes a hardened anvil, which transfers the energy straight down the axis of the post instead of into your arms.
The chuck holds the postA chuck (with the right adapter) caps the post, keeps the blow square, and lifts off cleanly when the post is set.

Post Driver FAQ

Can one post driver handle several different post types?

Yes – that is how the Rhino line is designed. Each driver takes quick-change chucks and bolt-in Chuck-Lok adapters, so one tool covers a range of posts. A Multi-Pro XA, for example, goes from T-post and ground rod to channel, sign and wood posts just by swapping chucks. Use the matcher above and it will find the single driver that covers your whole mix, or tell you when a job genuinely needs two tools.

What is the difference between gas, air and hydraulic post drivers?

Gas Pro-Series drivers are self-contained – one person, no compressor – and best for fence, ranch, ground rod and sign posts up to about 2-3/8 in round. Pneumatic PD-series drivers need an air compressor but scale all the way to guardrail, beams and sheet pile. The hydraulic HPD-60 runs off a power pack or your skid steer, with low vibration, no exhaust at the tool, and no trouble in freezing weather.

What size air compressor do I need for a pneumatic post driver?

The PD-55 needs about 42 CFM at 90 psi. The PD-110 and PD-140 need about 64 CFM at 100 psi, and the PD-200 needs about 72 CFM at 100 psi. Every pneumatic driver should run through a Filter-Regulator-Lubricator, which protects the piston and is what most of the tool’s service life depends on. Crowder Supply stocks portable air compressors and the Rhino FRL with carrier.

Which Rhino post driver is best for T-posts?

For T-posts and round posts up to 1-5/8 in, the gas Ranch Pro is the lightest and fastest one-person choice at 35 lb. Step up to the Fence Pro if you also run round posts to 2-3/8 in, or the Multi-Pro for added square-tube and channel capability. On air, the PD-55 drives T-post and round posts to 3-5/8 in.

What drives guardrail posts or solar piles?

For occasional guardrail, the pneumatic PD-140 drives 4×6 H-column posts with the correct master chuck and drive cap. For high-volume highway guardrail or rows of ground-mount solar pile, the skid-steer-mounted Guardrail Pro (posts to 8.5 ft) and Solar Pro (piles to 15 ft) mount to a skid steer you already own. If the same crew also sets smaller posts, pair the attachment with an HPD-60 run off that same machine.

How often does a Rhino post driver need service?

Grease the driver every 8 to 10 operating hours with Rhino Pro-Series grease – that single habit drives most of the tool’s service life. Beyond that, keep a service kit on the shelf for seals and wear parts, and inspect the chuck and anvil face, which are the highest-wear components. Rhino backs the drivers with a Lifetime Impact Warranty and there are over 300 service centers nationwide.
