How a Drill String Works

The piston does not push the steel like a nail. It launches a compressive stress wave that travels the rod at roughly 16,000 feet per second – about 15 times the speed of sound in air – and delivers the blow to the carbide while the rod barely moves. Every defect in the path reflects part of that wave, which is why rod and thread condition decide penetration rate.

The operating cycle

  1. StrikeThe piston hits the shank 1,800-4,500 times a minute – each blow around 150-220 ft-lb in a hand-held drill.
  2. WaveA compressive pulse races down the rod at ~16,000 ft per second to the carbide.
  3. CrushThe carbide crushes a fraction of an inch of rock at the bottom of the hole.
  4. IndexBetween blows the drill turns the steel 10-15 degrees so the carbide lands on fresh rock.
  5. FlushAir or water down the hollow bore lifts cuttings out so they are not re-crushed.
Why joints matter: a tight, greased coupling passes the wave; a loose one burns 8-10% of it as heat and hammers its own threads to death.

Know Your Thread Before You Order

Three generations of standards coexist on real jobsites. Buying the wrong thread once is how contractors become loyal to whoever untangles it. Four checks identify almost any rod.

Measure rod diameter

R25 and H are ~1 in; R32 is 1-1/4 in; R38 and T38 are ~1-1/2 in. Diameter narrows it fast.

Read the profile

Round, rope-like coils = R thread. Flat-topped trapezoid = T thread. Short and coarse behind a shoulder = H.

Check the drive

Does the bit seat on a forged shoulder (H), or do the threads themselves carry the wave (R and T)?

Gauge a taper

No threads at all? It is tapered. Our taper gauges tell 11 from 12 degrees; imports often run 7.

On racks, thread protectors on. Corrosion pits become fatigue cracks; a rod left wet in a hole over a weekend is measurably closer to breaking.

Drill Steel Questions, Answered Straight

How do I know which shank my drill takes?
Hand-held drills all take hex shanks, sized across the flats and by length above the collar – 7/8 x 3-1/4, 7/8 x 4-1/4, and 1 x 4-1/4 cover the great majority. It is a hard constraint: the shank must match the chuck exactly or the piston strikes wrong and batters both drill and steel. Larger rig-mounted rock drills do not use hex steel at all – they drive splined striking bars, and we stock striking bars across a wide range of manufacturers and models. What is the difference between H, rope, and T threads?
H thread is the US contractor standard – a short coarse thread behind a forged shoulder, where the shoulder (not the thread) carries the blow; it needs constant down pressure. Rope (R25-R51) threads are round-profile extension threads that uncouple easily, ideal for jacklegs. Trapezoidal (T38-T51) threads carry more torque and survive more make-and-break, which is why drifter rigs use them. Adapters cross all of them.
When do I need extension rods instead of one steel?
Once the hole is deeper than a single steel can reach – roughly 14 ft for shanked steel – you move to an extension string: rope or T-thread rods joined by couplings, added as the hole deepens. If the hole must hold gauge to depth with no joints, an integral steel series is the alternative. Past about 20 ft, top-hammer efficiency falls off and the conversation becomes down-the-hole (DTH).
Can I connect two different threads?
Yes – that is what the adapter matrix is for. Coupling adapters join two different female threads, bit adapters run one thread’s bit on another’s rod, and stud rods join two males. What is a whirlibit, and when should I use one?
A whirlibit is a one-piece drill steel with a silver-brazed carbide chisel tip – bit and steel in a single forging. It is the fast, simple choice for small, shallow holes (5/8-1-1/2 in, to about 45 in deep): dowels, anchors, and plug-and-feather work with nothing to assemble or loosen. The tip is not replaceable, so a worn whirlibit is a retired whirlibit, and the slender body bends if you side-load it.
How much does thread lubrication really matter?
A lot. Thread compound on every make-up prevents galling and is credited with extending rod life on the order of 30%, and rock drill oil at the chuck keeps the shank from galling and mushrooming in the bushing. Both together cost a few minutes of habit and prevent the two most common – and most expensive – failures in the category.
