An FRL conditions compressed air before it reaches the tool: the filter strips water and pipe scale, the regulator holds a steady pressure, the lubricator meters oil in so vanes and bearings never run dry. Chicago Pneumatic builds the three modules so they can be bought singly — a filter, a filter-regulator with diaphragm valve, an air line regulator, or the L1BSP lubricator with its 180 cl tank and automatic refill — or as a composite FRL rated to 232 psi with automatic or semi-automatic drain. Sizing an FRL to the Drop
Size on flow, not on habit. Add the CFM of every tool on the drop, then pick a body whose port matches or beats the supply line — CP lists this range with 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 in. ports at 140 to 240 psi maximum working pressure. Undersizing stays hidden until two operators pull triggers together and compressor pressure at the tool sags.
Which Modules You Actually Need
Filtration is never optional. Regulation matters wherever a tool has a rated pressure. Lubrication depends on the tool: vane motors and percussive tools want it, some sealed and clutch-fed tools do not.

Where It Goes in the Line
Mount the FRL at the drop, downstream of any dryer or moisture separation and upstream of the hose, bowl vertical, drain reachable. Keep the lubricator last. For the jobsite version of the same job, see hose oilers.
Common Questions
Do I need all three units? Not always. A filter alone protects the tool from water and scale; add a regulator when tools share a line at different pressures; add a lubricator only where the tool calls for oiled air.
Is this BSP or NPT? Most of the line is listed BSP; the mini oiler is NPT. The two will start together and then leak, so confirm the port and bridge any mismatch with an adapter from connectors.
What pressure can these take? CP rates the composite FRL at 232 psi (16 bar) maximum, the line as a whole in a 140 to 240 psi band. Set the regulator to the tool’s rated pressure, not line pressure.
