Drill Steel & Extension Rods
Extension rods add depth in sections, so one drill reaches well past the length of a single steel. The top hammer extension rod comes in hex or round shank, rope or trapezoidal thread, and male/male or male/female ends — R25 1 in. round x 12 in. is a typical stocked build — from Brunner & Lay, Mitsubishi, Rockmore, Sandvik and others. All-thread rods are threaded end to end and cut to any length from 8 up to 168 in., which is what tieback, micropile and geotechnical crews order. Heavy drifter and club rods, such as the 1 in. hex R32–R25 at 9 ft 2 in., resist bending through underground drifting and surface benching. Join sections with couplings and thread adapters, run them behind a rock drill or drifter, and finish with carbide bits. Ships from Denver.

Which Rod for Which Job
Pick by depth and by how hard the ground hits back. Standard extension rods couple end to end for blast, anchor and utility holes. All-thread rods carry thread over their whole length, so they cut to an odd length and take a coupling anywhere along the bar — tiebacks, micropiles, soil nails. Drifter and club rods are the heavy choice: stiffer bars for high-impact loads in tunneling and benching.
Rods, Stud Rods and Hole Savers
Threads and lengths below are example builds; most of this steel is configured to order.
| Rod | Example build | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Extension rod, M/M or M/F | R25, 1 in. round x 12 in. | Sectional top-hammer rod; hex or round, rope or trapezoidal |
| All thread rod, male | R32, 1-1/4 in. round x 8 in. | Threaded end to end; cut 8 to 168 in. |
| Drifter / club rod | 1 in. hex, R32–R25, 9 ft 2 in. | Heavy rod for drifting and benching |
| Stud rod H55–X51 | H55 to X51, male both ends | Joins two female ends across thread families |
| Stud rod R51–T45 | R51 to T45, male both ends | Steps a rope thread onto T thread steel |
| Stud rod R51–TTN40 | R51 to Titan 40, male both ends | Steps a rope thread onto a Titan string |
| Bell hole saver | 1 in. rope | Sacrificial piece that wears at the collar, not the rod |
| Spear hole saver | GT60 | Collar protection on GT60 strings |
Use the selectors on each listing above to set thread, shank and length, or call with your drill and we will spec it.
Threads and Custom Lengths
Rope threads (R25, R32, R51) and T threads (T38, T45) dominate extension work, with H55, X51, Titan and GT60 on drifters and larger rigs. Rods are cut to order, so a 4 ft rod and a 144 in. rod are the same conversation. When two ends do not match, the drill steel adapters buyer’s guide shows which coupling bridges them.
Common Questions
What is a drill rod? The steel bar that carries percussion, rotation and flushing air from the drill down to the bit. Extension rods do it in coupled sections; a one-piece shanked rod does it in a single bar for shallow handheld holes.
Can you make a custom extension drill rod? Yes. All-thread rods cut from 8 in. up to 168 in., and extension rods build in hex or round shank, rope or trapezoidal thread, male/male or male/female. Send the thread, shank and length.
Do you carry tapered drill rods? The rods on this page are threaded, not tapered. Tapered steel runs taper-shank bits and bit shells for 6 degree taper drill steel, and a taper gauge confirms the angle before you order.
How fast can you ship? Crowder Supply ships from Denver, and in-stock items ordered by 4 PM Eastern go out the same day. Stock moves, so call or email if you need a firm ship date on a specific drill steel extension rods before you order.
