This is the steel that goes in the ground on a soil nail, micropile or tieback. An R32N anchor rod in 10 ft lengths carries rotation and grout to the toe, MAI L&N couplings in R32/42 join rod to rod for depth, and an R32/SW46 nut locks the head at the plate. At the cutting end, pick by ground: a three-wing drag bit or a standard or step drag bit in clay, moist soil, sand and gravel; a hardened steel soil bit in soft to medium ground; and carbide cross or button bits where rock appears. Pair the string with a grout swivel to inject while you drill. Everything here ships from Denver, and in-stock steel ordered by 4 PM ET goes out the same day.

Match the Bit to the Ground
Drag bits earn their keep where standard bit styles stall — clay, moist soil, sand and gravel — shearing material rather than crushing it, which lifts production and cuts driller fatigue. Three wings spread the cutting force. Carbide cross and button bits take over in rock.

Reaching Depth
One 10 ft rod rarely makes design depth. Couplings thread rod to rod so the string grows in 10 ft steps while the same bit stays at the toe. Coupling and nut are make-and-break parts — keep spares. For percussive strings, see extension rods and thread adapters.
Common Questions
Are paddle bits and drag bits the same? In soil drilling, yes — the drag bit is the paddle-style cutter crews use in clay, sand and gravel. We stock left- and right-rotation drag bits, standard and step.
Will an R32 button bit fit my rod? If the rod is R32 rope thread, yes. Every bit here is R32; the anchor rod is R32N. For other threads, see the drill steel adapters guide.
How deep can I drill? As deep as you couple. Rods run 10 ft each and join with R32/42 extension couplings, so depth is set by the rig and the ground.
Cross bit or button bit? The cross bit has four carbide edges for multi-directional cutting in broken ground; the button bit places buttons for life in tough formations. Both are R32 x 4 in. See the soil stabilization line.
