A Rhino 4×6-inch Column Driving Cap is a heavy-duty steel attachment designed to fit over the top of a 4×6-inch timber post or column during pile driving or setting operations. Its primary function is to protect the end of the post from damage when it is being driven into the ground with a hydraulic or pneumatic post driver. The cap distributes the impact energy evenly across the post head, preventing splitting, mushrooming, or deformation of the wood or composite material. It also helps center and stabilize the post under repeated high-force blows.

Design:

  • Dimensions: Sized to snugly fit a nominal 4×6″ post (actual dimension typically 3-1/2×5-1/2).
The cap interior may have slight tolerances for different lumber sizes.
  • Shape: Rectangular box-like cap with reinforced top plate. Top surface may be slightly convex or fitted with a replaceable polymer pad to absorb shock. Side skirts (collar) extend down 36 inches to hold the post securely.
  • Compatibility: Designed to attach to the Rhino Pro-Series, Ranch Pro, or PD-series post drivers using quick-change pins or locking sleeves. Some designs use a drive coupler or adaptor sleeve system.
  • Protective Features: Reinforced welds at corners and seams. Optionally lined with urethane or UHMW polyethylene inserts to minimize post marring. Drain holes to prevent moisture accumulation.

Applications:

  • Fence and deck construction
  • Timber foundations or pole buildings
  • Dock and boardwalk piles
  • Signpost installation
  • Retaining wall posts

Materials:

  • Body/Housing: High-strength alloy steel (AISI 4140 or equivalent). Heat-treated for durability
  • Impact Plate: Hardened steel (Brinell 400500) – Withstands repeated blows
  • Liner (Optional): Urethane / UHMW Polyethylene – Absorbs shock, protects post
  • Finish: Zinc-plated or powder-coated – Corrosion resistance
  • Fasteners/Pins: Alloy steel, zinc-coated – Secures cap to driver
