APT 131 Pneumatic Backfill Tamper — The Trench Crew Standard

One tool, three butt styles, and more units on utility trucks than any other APT product we sell. The 37-lb M131 packs clay and trench backfill solid with 670 slow, hard blows per minute — foundation repair, pavement patching, asphalt packing, and setting power or telephone poles. Some crews call it a pogo compactor or pogo-stick tamper; APT calls it the M131.

The short version

One decision: the butt. The 6-in. iron butt is the general trench-and-patch standard; the 3-in. solid butt gets into narrow trenches and rammed-earth forms; the pole (half-moon) butt wraps utility poles and posts to pack them tight. All three are $1,265, in stock. Compaction basics: the Tampers & Rammers Buyer’s Guide, or compare at all backfill & air tampers. Questions? Call 1-888-883-5144.

APT 131 Pneumatic Backfill Tamper

Built to live in a trench: a flapper valve lets dirt pass without stalling the tool, a built-in oiler keeps it fed, and 670 BPM of slow, hard blows compact soil in lifts the way a plate compactor never reaches. At 51-7/8 in. long, you tamp standing up.

Which Butt Style Do I Need?

Trench backfill & patches

The 6-in. iron butt covers ground fast and packs lifts solid — the default for utility and paving crews.

6-in. iron butt

Narrow trenches & forms

The 3-in. solid butt concentrates every blow for tight trenches, formwork, and rammed-earth walls.

3-in. solid butt

Setting poles & posts

The half-moon pole butt hugs the pole so backfill packs tight against it — power, phone, fence.

Backfill Tamper Questions, Answered

What is a pneumatic backfill tamper?

A pneumatic backfill tamper is an air-powered compaction tool: a long-handled ram that delivers slow, hard blows — 670 per minute on the APT M131 — to pack soil, clay, and backfill in layers. Crews use it where plate compactors cannot go: inside trenches, against poles and posts, around pipe, and in formwork. Some catalogs and crews call the same tool a pogo compactor or air tamper.

Which butt style should I choose?

The 6-in. internal-reinforced malleable iron butt is the general-purpose choice for trench backfill and pavement patching. The 3-in. solid butt concentrates force for narrow trenches and rammed-earth work. The pole (half-moon) butt is shaped to wrap poles and posts so the backfill packs tight against them. Same tool and price either way — and butts are replaceable parts.

Backfill tamper vs plate compactor vs jumping jack — which do I need?

Different reach. A plate compactor covers open ground; a jumping jack (rammer) compacts wide trench bottoms; a backfill tamper is the precision tool that works inside narrow trenches, against poles, and in lifts around pipe where neither machine fits. Utility crews usually run a tamper plus one of the machines.

What air compressor does the M131 need?

It runs on 38–42 CFM at 90 psi through a 1/2-in. air inlet — any small towable compressor, or the same air that runs your breaker, powers it. See the compressors we stock.

Is this the same tool as APT part number 5214?

Yes — 5214 is the M131 with the 6-in. butt, 5214-03 the 3-in. solid butt, and 5214-04 the pole butt. Order by either number.

How fast does the M131 ship?

All three butt styles are in stock and ship same day on orders by 4 PM Eastern, free UPS Ground on most orders, from Denver.
