Atlas Copco Rail Tampers — The Cobra TT Gas Tie Tamper

Purpose-tuned for track: 30 ft-lb at 1,620 BPM packs ballast under ties firmly without pulverizing it, from a 53-lb gas machine that walks the right-of-way with the crew — no compressor truck on the ballast.

The short version

The Cobra TT is the gas answer for spot tamping, tie replacement, and short-line maintenance. Crews running hydraulic tools tamp with the LH 190 E Tie Tamper at $850 instead, and TEX pick hammers drive the spikes.

Cobra TT Gas Tie Tamper

The railway Cobra: impact energy tuned down to 30 ft-lb at a faster 1,620 BPM — the recipe that consolidates ballast under the tie instead of crushing it. Same carry-anywhere platform as the PROe, with tamping tools on standard shanks.

Choose it when: you tamp ties on spot repairs, sidings, and short lines where a tamping machine cannot justify its mobilization.

Rail Tamper Questions

Why not just tamp with a regular breaker?

Blow energy: a full-power breaker pulverizes ballast into fines that will not hold surface. The TT’s 30 ft-lb at higher frequency packs stone tight without degrading it — that is the whole design brief.

Gas or hydraulic tie tamper?

Gas TT when the crew walks the track self-contained. The LH 190 E Tie Tamper when a hydraulic power pack already rides the hi-rail — it is quieter and $850.

Can the Cobra TT break concrete too?

Yes — it accepts the same applications as the PROe at reduced energy, so crossings, light demolition, and post driving are within reach. If breaking is the main job, buy the PROe.

How fast does it ship?

In stock — same day by flat-rate Freight on orders by 4 PM Eastern, with tamping pads and 2-stroke oil in the same shipment.
