Frequently Asked Questions

What is a needle scaler used for?

A needle scaler drives a bundle of loose steel needles against a surface at high frequency. Because the needles move independently they conform to welds, corners, pitting and irregular shapes, stripping rust, mill scale, weld flux and old coatings without cutting into the parent metal the way a single chisel would. It is the standard tool for surface prep before painting or coating.

SF-A1L1 or SF-A1L2?

Same 1 in. bore, same 1-1/8 in. stroke, same 4,600 BPM and 12 CFM — the difference is the body. The SF-A1L1 is 17 in. and 6.25 lb and ships with 19 needles. The SF-A1L2 is 10 in. and 4.2 lb, for working inside vessels, between stiffeners and overhead where the full-size tool will not fit.

Are the needles included?

The SF-A1L1 includes a bag of 19 standard 7 in. needles, TAMCO part S834024. Replacement needles and scaler steel are available — call 1-888-883-5144 with your shank pattern.

Do you carry Ingersoll-Rand pattern scalers or a scabbler?

Not as stocked products, but we can quote them: the SF-A182NS needle scaler and SF-A182WF weld flux chipper use IR-pattern steel, and the SF-T3 triple-piston scabbler scarifies concrete and steel at 5,200 BPM. See the special order section on the Toku brand page.

Is Tamco the same as Toku?

Yes — TOKU of Japan manufactures the pneumatic line and TAMCO Tools distributes it in the US. See the Toku brand page for all eight Toku categories.
