Thread & Taper Systems
Rock drill bits connect to steel one of two ways. Threaded bits use a rope or buttress thread — R25, R32, R38 (rope) and T38, T45, T51 (buttress) — matched to threaded extension rods for deep or coupled holes. Tapered bits press onto a tapered drill-steel end (6° or 12°, or the older D/E/H tapers) for shallow handheld work with shanked rods.
