An air hammer, scaler, or rivet hammer is only as good as the steel in its nose. Identify the Shank First
Style comes second; the shank decides whether the chisel fits at all. Measure the shank on a chisel already in the hammer, note whether it is round, hex, flatnose, or quarter-octagon, then work down the range.

Cutters, Comb Blades, and Rivet Sets

Retainers and Springs
A retainer holds the chisel in the nose so it cannot be thrown when the tool cycles off the work. Zip change retainers swap steel without tools, beehive retainers are the classic coil type, and compression springs and adjusting sleeves are listed as replacements. Common Questions
How do I know which shank my air hammer takes? Pull the chisel you have and measure it: .401 in. and .498 in. round are the two common US air hammer shanks, with .401 in. hex, 12.5 mm hex, and 5/8 in. hex on scaling tools. If in doubt, send us the tool model.
Is this the same as jackhammer steel? No. These are air hammer and scaler chisels, all under 3/4 in. shank. Paving breakers take far heavier 7/8 in. and 1-1/4 in. hex steel — that is tool steel.
