APT Jackhammer Questions, Answered
What is a pneumatic paving breaker?
A pneumatic paving breaker — the tool most crews call a jackhammer — is an air-powered demolition hammer that drives a steel point or chisel into concrete, asphalt, or rock. It runs off a portable air compressor and is sized by weight class: 30-lb tools for light slab, 60-lb for general work, and 90-lb for heavy pavement demolition. APT builds all four classes: the M117, M140, M160, and M190.
What size jackhammer do I need?
Match weight to concrete. A 30-lb breaker (M117) handles 4–6 in. unreinforced slab, floors, and overhead-adjacent work. The 60-lb class (M160) is the general-purpose choice for slab, roadway, and asphalt. Go 90-lb (M190) for reinforced concrete over 6 in., bridge deck, and road building — its slower 1,350 BPM blows each hit harder. The 43-lb M140 splits the difference when air supply or carry weight is tight.
What is the Airgo-Line back head?
Airgo-Line® is APT’s anti-vibration option: an ergonomic back head that reduces vibration to the operator’s hands and arms with no loss of impact power. It is interchangeable with the standard back head and adds about 2–3 in. of length. Crews running a breaker all shift — or tracking vibration exposure hours — order the M140A, M160A, or M190A versions.
What air compressor do these breakers need?
At 90 psi: the M117 uses 34–38 CFM, the M140 uses 48, the M160 uses 60–65, and the M190 uses 75–80. A 185-CFM towable compressor runs two 60-lb breakers at once; a 110-CFM machine runs any single breaker on this page. Size with headroom for hose length and altitude, and see the compressors we stock.
Are these the same tools as APT part numbers 5235, 5239, or 17923?
Yes. APT renumbered its catalog: 5199/5200 are the M117 chuck options, 17923 is the M140, 18041 the M140A, 5235/5236 the M160, 17746/17747 the M160A, 5239/5240 the M190, and 18618/18619 the M190A. Order by either number — the tools are identical, and every option above is the current-production version.
Which shank steel do APT breakers take?
The M117 takes 7/8 x 3-1/4 or 1 x 4-1/4 in. hex steel depending on chuck; the M140 takes 1 x 4-1/4; the M160 and M190 take the standard heavy-breaker shanks, 1-1/8 x 6 or 1-1/4 x 6 in. We stock moil points, chisels, asphalt cutters, and clay spades in all four shanks — add them to the same order.
Do you stock APT parts?
Yes — chisel retainers, rubber bumpers, whip hose assemblies, repair kits, pistons, and handle parts for the whole APT breaker line are on our shelves in Denver. Call 1-888-883-5144 with your model and part number and parts ship same day.
How fast do APT breakers ship?
In-stock breakers — every configuration on this page — ship same day on orders placed by 4 PM Eastern. Most orders go free by UPS Ground, and we ship nationwide from Denver, Colorado.
