What is a pneumatic rock drill?
A pneumatic rock drill is an air-powered percussion drill that hammers and rotates a hex-shank steel with a carbide bit to bore holes in rock, concrete, and masonry. Unlike a breaker, it rotates the steel between blows and flushes cuttings from the hole — dry with air, or wet with water for silica dust control. APT builds four: the M109, M115, M137, and M155.
Which APT rock drill should I get?
For anchor bolts and small dowel holes, the 9-lb M109; add the 19-lb M115 if you also want percussion-only chipping. For production drilling, the 38-lb M137 covers utility and quarry work on 85–90 CFM, and the 61-lb M155 sinker — our best-selling APT tool — drills blast holes in granite all shift on 110–120 CFM.
Wet or dry — which flushing should I choose?
Dry drills flush cuttings with air only. Wet versions of the M137 and M155 run water through the steel, which suppresses silica dust — the usual choice for OSHA silica compliance, underground work, and long production shifts. Same drill, same speeds; pick wet when dust control matters.
What size air compressor do these drills need?
At 90 psi: the M109 uses 19–21 CFM, the M115 32–36, the M137 85–90, and the M155 110–120. Size the compressor with headroom for hose length and altitude — we stock towable compressors to match every drill on this page.
What drill steel and bits do they take?
Standard hex shanks: 3/4 round x 3-3/4 on the M109, 7/8 x 3-1/4 on the M115, and your choice of 7/8 x 3-1/4, 7/8 x 4-1/4, or 1 x 4-1/4 on the M137 and M155. We stock hex drill steel and carbide bits for every chuck — add them to the same order.
Are these the same drills as APT part numbers 5233 or 5227?
Yes — the old numbers map straight to current models: 17643 = M109, 5197 = M115, 5223–5228 = M137 chuck and flushing options, 5229–5234 = M155 options. Order by either number.
