What is a backfill tamper used for?
A backfill tamper compacts soil and substrate back into a trench or around a foundation, pole or pipe run after the excavation is done. Proper compaction in lifts is what stops the ground — and any pavement over it — from settling later. An air tamper does it in places a plate compactor cannot reach, like a narrow utility cut.
What are the Jet-06’s specs?
39.6 lb, 49 in. overall length, 750 blows per minute, 5-1/2 in. piston stroke, 1-1/2 in. piston diameter, 35.2 CFM at 90 PSI, 1/2 in. NPT air inlet. It ships with a steel tamping pad.
How does an air tamper differ from a bench rammer?
Size and setting. A backfill tamper like the Jet-06 is a jobsite tool with a long shaft for trench and foundation work. Bench rammers are small foundry and mill tools for packing molding sand at a bench. They are not interchangeable.
What compressor do I need?
35.2 CFM at 90 PSI, so around 45-50 CFM of compressor once you allow for hose losses. See the air compressor buyer’s guide.
