A spike driver is a paving-breaker platform with a driving head instead of a chisel: the mass and the blow rate go into setting a spike rather than breaking concrete. Texas Pneumatic builds two, the TX60SD and the TX90SD, both taking a head up to 1-7/8 in maximum diameter. Spike driver questions, answered
What is the difference between the TX60SD and TX90SD?
Weight class, and therefore energy per blow. The TX60SD is the 60 lb tool at $2,490 and is easier to move along a track all day. The TX90SD is the 90 lb tool at $2,700 and puts more mass behind each blow, which matters in hardwood ties and on production work. Both accept a head up to 1-7/8 in diameter.
Can I use a spike driver for ground rods?
Yes, with the correct driving cap — it is one of the more common non-rail uses of the platform. Crowder stocks ground rod drivers and drive caps for paving-breaker and chipping-hammer shanks; call 1-888-883-5144 and tell us the rod diameter and the tool you are running.
Do you stock pick hammers?
Not in the Texas Pneumatic line — and this page is titled “pick hammers and spike drivers” because that is how the category is organised across the site, not because TPT builds a pick hammer. How much air do they need?
Plan on the same order as the equivalent paving breaker class — roughly 59 CFM for the 60 lb tool and 75 CFM for the 90 lb tool at 90 psi. Call 1-888-883-5144 to confirm against your compressor before you order.
What about driving posts and pilings?
That is a different family of tool. Look at the post driving range — Rhino gas and pneumatic post drivers and Atlas Copco hydraulic drivers are all built for posts, and a spike driver is the wrong tool for that job.
