What is a pneumatic chipping hammer?
A pneumatic chipping hammer is a hand-held air hammer that drives a chisel, moil point, or scaling tool for surface work: removing weld slag and scale, chipping concrete, stripping forms, cement finishing, and cleaning build-up out of mixers. Lighter and faster than a breaker, it is the precision percussion tool of the air-tool family. APT builds seven, from 12 to 22 lb.
Which stroke length should I choose?
Stroke sets the blow: 2-in. (M652) hits fastest and lightest for finishing and thin scale; 3-in. (M653, M263, M43) is the everyday balance; 4-in. (M654, M264, M44) hits hardest at 1,375 BPM for tougher concrete. Most first-hammer buyers do best with a 3-in. model.
What is the difference between the 650, 260, and M43/M44 series?
Duty class. The 650 series is the classic light pistol-grip hammer (12–16 lb) with a flapper valve. The 260 series (14–15 lb) adds APT’s patented automatic ball valve and a 2-bolt drop-forged handle. The M43 and M44 (21–22 lb) are the heavy-duty pair: 4-bolt handles with grade 8 bolts for easy service, and extra mass that does the pushing for you on all-day work.
.680 round or .580 hex nose — which do I need?
Match the nose bushing to your steel: .680 round collar shank steel is the most common in the US; .580 hex locks rotation for tools like scaling chisels. If you already own steels, buy the nose that fits them — both cost the same.
What do the retainer options mean?
The retainer holds the steel in the nose. Standard oval collar with spring ($678) is the classic; the quick-change ball retainer with locking spring ($769) speeds steel changes; the bolt-on ball retainer ($791) needs no spring at all. The -02/-04/-06 suffixes on APT part numbers are exactly these three options.
What air compressor does a chipping hammer need?
