Chicago Pneumatic Needle Scalers, Long Reach Scalers and Concrete Scabblers
Four surface-preparation tools, $830 to $1,238. Needle and long-reach scalers strip rust, mill scale, slag and failed coating off steel; carbide and cobalt-tipped scabblers scarify concrete for overlays, screeds and floor coatings. All four run on plain jobsite or shop air.
The short version
These are surface-preparation tools, and the substrate decides which one you want. Working on steel — structural, tank, hull, pipe, weldment — you want a scaler: the CP0456 for rust, mill scale, slag and coating removal on irregular shapes, or the B20 when the surface is 3 to 6 ft away and you would otherwise be building staging. Working on concrete you want a scabbler: the CP 0006 at 4 in. wide for open floor, the CP 0066 at 2 in. wide for edges, corners and joints, and the CP 0066 NS with cobalt tips wherever a spark is not acceptable. Neither group substitutes for the other — a needle scaler will not profile concrete, and a scabbler will destroy steel.
Scaler or Scabbler?
Both prepare a surface for whatever goes on next. They do it to different materials, by different mechanisms, and they leave different profiles.

A scabbler is not a grinder and not a shot blaster. Grinding and blasting are for large open areas and a shallow, even profile. A scabbler hits harder and deeper, and it goes where a ride-on machine cannot: up to a wall, into a corner, along a joint, and on the small patch that does not justify mobilising anything larger. Chicago Pneumatic also note it is used deliberately for finish work — scabbling produces the ornamental and contrasting textures you see on exposed concrete structures.
Sparks matter more often than people expect. The CP 0066 NS uses cobalt piston tips instead of carbide specifically so it can be used in refineries, tank farms, grain handling, paint shops and other classified areas. If there is any question about the atmosphere where the tool will run, order the NS.
Needle Scalers and Long Reach Scalers — Steel Surface Prep
A needle scaler drives a bundle of loose steel needles rather than a single chisel. Each needle finds its own depth, so the tool follows a weld bead, a corner, a pitted plate or a flange without gouging the parent metal. That is why it is the standard tool for preparing structural steel and for cleaning up after welding.
Rust, mill scale and old coating
The everyday job. Stripping back to bright metal before paint, on plate, beams, handrail, grating and anything else with edges and corners a sander cannot follow. Faster than wire brushing and far more controllable than blasting on a small area.
Weld slag and spatter
Cleaning a weld without touching the bead. The needles knock slag out of the toe and lift spatter off the surrounding plate, which is exactly what an inspector wants to see before an NDT check.
Tanks, vessels and hulls
This is the B20’s ground. At 27.95 to 68.11 in. one operator can reach across a hopper, into a vessel or behind pipe rack without staging or a lift. On 4 CFM it will run all day off a small compressor, which matters when the machine is outside and the tool is not.
Chipping and scraping too
The B20 takes chipping and scraping accessories on the same 5/8 in. hex shank, and the CP0456 swaps between a needle bundle and a 1/2 in. quarter-octagon chisel. Between them they cover soft coating removal, hard scale and light chipping without a second tool.

CP0456 Pneumatic Scaler
One tool that buys two. Fitted with the needle bundle it strips rust, mill scale, weld slag and failed coating off irregular steel without cutting into the parent metal, because the needles ride the contour instead of digging a line. Swap to the chipper head and the same body drives a 1/2 in. quarter-octagon chisel. A quick-change collar retainer and a steel housing rather than composite — this is the heavy-duty end of the needle scaler range.

B20 Pneumatic Scaler
The whole point is the length. Four bodies from 27.95 in. to 68.11 in. let one operator scale the inside of a tank, vessel, hopper or hull, or reach behind structure, without staging or a lift. Chicago Pneumatic call it three tools in one — chipping, scraping and de-scaling — because the 5/8 in. hex shank takes all three accessory types. And it does it on 4 CFM, the lowest air draw of any CP tool we list.

Concrete Scabblers — Surface Scarifying
A scabbler drives three 4-point carbide-tipped pistons straight down into concrete at 3,000 blows a minute each. It removes laitance, curing compound and the damaged top layer, and leaves a deep, keyed profile for an overlay, screed, membrane or floor coating to bond into. Chicago Pneumatic build two, each in two versions.
Overlay and coating preparation
The main job. A power-floated slab is too smooth and too weak at the surface for an overlay to hold. Scabbling takes the laitance off and opens a mechanical key, which is what the coating manufacturer’s profile spec is asking for.
Construction joints
Roughening a cold joint or a kicker before the next pour so the two lifts bond. The 2 in. CP 0066 gets right up to formwork and along the joint line where the 4 in. tool cannot.
Levelling and spot repair
Taking down high spots, cleaning out around a patch, and squaring the edge of a repair. Small enough areas that bringing in a ride-on scarifier is not worth the mobilisation.
Architectural and anti-slip finishes
Chicago Pneumatic list this explicitly: scabblers are used to produce ornamental and contrasting finishes on building structures, and to put a deliberate texture on ramps, steps and walkways.

CP 0006 Pneumatic Scabbler
The standard concrete scabbler. Three 4-point tungsten carbide-tipped pistons hit straight down at 3,000 blows a minute each, scarifying the surface to the profile an overlay, a screed or a coating needs to key into. A chamfered cylinder block keeps the work visible and lets you run right into a corner, and the back-head grip puts your thrust in line with the tool.

CP 0066 Pneumatic Scabbler
The narrow scabbler, and the only one offered non-sparking. At 2 in. across and 11 in. long it gets into places the 4 in. CP 0006 cannot — up to a wall, into a corner, along a joint. The NS build swaps the carbide piston tips for cobalt, which is what lets it work in refineries, tank farms, grain handling and anywhere else a hot particle is not acceptable.

Width is the number that decides the job. The CP 0006 head is 4 in. across and the CP 0066 is 2 in. On open floor the wider head covers ground roughly twice as fast. Against a wall, in a corner or along a joint, the narrow head is the only one that will get there. Plenty of crews own both.
Both scabblers draw the same 27.5 CFM even though one is twice the width, because both drive three pistons. Air is not a reason to choose between them.
The CP 0066 bore is not printed legibly in our copy of the factory sheet, so the cell is left blank rather than guessed. Everything else in these tables is verbatim from Chicago Pneumatic.
Needles, Chisels and Replacement Pistons
On all four of these tools the working end is a wear part and is meant to be replaced. Budget for it the way you budget for abrasive.

Tungsten carbide tips last longer and are easily replaced — that is Chicago Pneumatic’s own line about this tool, and it is the reason to service a scabbler rather than replace it. Three pistons wear at roughly the same rate, so change them as a set and change the caps with them.

Needle bundles
Needles are consumable and are replaced as a set. They shorten and mushroom with use, and a worn bundle stops cleaning long before it looks finished. Bundle size and needle diameter are matched to the tool, so order by model.
B20 accessories on the 5/8 in. hex shank
The B20 takes chipping, scraping and de-scaling accessories on the same shank, which is what Chicago Pneumatic mean by three tools in one. A scraper blade for soft coating, a chisel for hard scale, needles for general surface prep.
CP0456 heads
The CP0456 is sold as either the chipper or the needle scaler build, and the working ends change on a quick-change collar retainer. If you expect to do both jobs, tell us and we will quote the second head with the tool.

Air consumption at 90 psi, running continuously. The scalers are the cheapest tools on air that Chicago Pneumatic build; the scabblers are middle of the road.

Water separator first. All four of these tools run at high blow rates on small pistons, and wet air is what kills them. A water separator at the compressor and an in-line lubricator ahead of the tool is the cheapest maintenance available. The CP water separator is part 8900 0050 01.
Silica dust. Scabbling concrete generates respirable crystalline silica, which is a regulated exposure. Plan for extraction, wet methods or respiratory protection before the tool arrives, not after.

What is a pneumatic needle scaler used for?
A needle scaler removes rust, mill scale, weld slag and spatter, and failed paint or coating from steel. Instead of one chisel it drives a bundle of loose steel needles, and because each needle finds its own depth the tool follows welds, corners, pitting and flanges without gouging the parent metal. That makes it the standard tool for preparing structural steel, tanks, hulls and pipework before coating, and for cleaning welds before inspection.
What is the difference between a needle scaler and a chipping hammer?
The working end. A chipping hammer drives a single chisel and cuts a line, which is what you want on concrete, slag and heavy weld. A needle scaler drives a bundle of independent needles that ride the surface contour, which is what you want when you need to clean steel without cutting into it. The CP0456 covers both, because it takes either a needle bundle or a 1/2 in. quarter-octagon chipper head on the same body.
What is a concrete scabbler and when do I need one?
A scabbler drives three 4-point carbide-tipped pistons straight down into a concrete surface at 3,000 blows a minute each. It removes laitance, curing compound and the weak damaged top layer, and leaves a deep keyed profile for an overlay, screed, membrane or floor coating to bond into. You need one whenever a coating manufacturer specifies a surface profile, whenever a cold joint has to bond to the next pour, and whenever the area is too small or too enclosed to justify a ride-on scarifier.
Which CP scabbler should I buy, the CP 0006 or the CP 0066?
Head width decides it. The CP 0006 is 4 in. across and covers open floor roughly twice as fast. The CP 0066 is 2 in. across and 11 in. long, so it reaches up to walls, into corners and along construction joints where the wide head cannot. Both draw the same 27.5 CFM and both run three pistons, so air is not a factor. Many crews carry both.
What does the NS in CP 0066 NS mean?
Non-sparking. The NS build replaces the tungsten carbide piston tips with cobalt, so the tool can be used in refineries, tank farms, grain handling, paint shops and other classified areas where a hot particle is not acceptable. If there is any question about the atmosphere where the tool will run, order the NS build.
What is the CP 0006 SVR?
The vibration-reduced version of the CP 0006. It carries an isolated handle, which brings the weight from 10 lb to 15 lb and the length from 16 in. to 20 in. Scabbling is repetitive work that one person often does for hours at a stretch, and hand-arm vibration exposure is cumulative across the shift, so the SVR is worth the extra weight when the tool has a regular operator.
How long is the B20 long reach scaler?
Four bodies: 27.95, 43.31, 55.12 and 68.11 in. overall. All four run the same 5/8 in. hex shank at 2,200 blows a minute on 4 CFM. Pick on how far you need to reach without staging — inside a tank, a vessel or a hopper, or behind a pipe rack, the longest body often replaces a whole scaffold.
What size compressor do these need?
Very little for the scalers: the B20 draws 4 CFM and the CP0456 10 to 14 CFM, so shop air or a small portable will run either. The scabblers draw 27.5 CFM each, so a CPS 110 at 95 CFM will run three of them, and a CPS 185 at 180 CFM will run five. Put a water separator at the compressor either way — wet air is what wears these tools out.
Do the needles and pistons wear out?
Yes, and they are meant to. Needles shorten and mushroom, and a worn bundle stops cleaning long before it looks finished; they are replaced as a set. Scabbler pistons are tungsten carbide tipped precisely so they can be replaced rather than the tool: piston F 064604 and cap F 826706 for the CP 0006 and CP 0006 SVR, and cobalt piston 9753 2880 80 for the CP 0066 NS. Change all three pistons as a set and change the caps with them.
Is scabbling concrete a silica hazard?
Yes. Scabbling generates respirable crystalline silica, which is a regulated exposure in the US and most other jurisdictions. Plan for on-tool extraction, wet methods or respiratory protection as part of the job, not as an afterthought. We can talk through what other customers pair with these tools.
