Engines, Starting and Cold Weather
All three Viper gas models run the 25 hp Honda iGX800 with electronic fuel injection, which Vanair specifies for cold-weather starting, uniform rpm under load, and lower fuel burn than a carbureted engine. The Kaeser M17 turns a 17.4 hp Honda GX630 V-twin at 2,300–3,300 rpm at full load, built around Kaeser’s SIGMA PROFILE airend in a rotomolded cabinet. Below freezing, add the cold-weather option for Viper Gas or the anti-icing kit that dries the air before it can freeze the line.
Keeping a Gas Unit in Service
Gas compressors run on an hour meter. Rotary screws take a synthetic rotary screw fluid; the piston machines take a separate reciprocating compressor oil, and swapping them shortens airend life. Common Questions
What will a gas powered air compressor run? At 60–80 CFM the Viper gas units and the Kaeser M17 handle impact and tire tools, chipping hammers, blow-down, and field repairs off the truck. A crew running paving breakers or rock drills continuously needs more air than gas delivers.
