Chicago-Style, Air King and Crowsfoot Are the Same Fitting
Chicago-style, Air King, universal and crowsfoot all name the same claw coupling. Two lugs on each half interlock, a quarter turn seats them, and a rubber washer seals the joint. Every one mates with every other one, which is why rental fleets and compressor crews standardize on it. It is a mechanical joint, not a push-to-connect coupler, and it has to be pinned to stay together under load.
Sizing the Fitting to the Hose
Two numbers decide the order: hose inside diameter and the coupling’s NPT thread. Breaker and rock drill work runs 3/4 in. and 1 in. contractor hose. Then match the clamp to the hose outside diameter, not the ID — the galvanized Dixon K Series covers it in two sizes, K3 at 3/8 in. band thickness with a 13/16 in. clamp ID, and K5 at 5/8 in. with a 1-1/4 in. ID.

Common Questions
What is a Chicago-style air fitting? A two-lug claw coupling — Dixon calls the line Air King — that joins with a quarter turn and seals on a washer. Are crowsfoot and Air King fittings the same thing? Yes. Crowsfoot, crow’s foot, Chicago and Air King are all trade names for the same universal claw fitting. It is what comes installed on our air hose assemblies feeding paving breakers and rock drills.
Will a 1/4 or 3/8 in. quick-connect coupler mate with an Air King? No. The small push-to-connect plugs and sockets used on shop air are a separate interchange with no claw lugs, and the two families do not cross. Chicago-style claw fittings are their own standard — keep one system on a jobsite line.
Do I have to use a safety clip? Use one on every pressurized claw connection. The wire retainer will not pass through the holes in the mating flanges until the lugs are fully locked, so it also confirms the coupling is seated. For added protection on the hose run, add a hose safety whip check.
