Oil, Lubricants, and Coolants
Every machine on the job takes a specific fluid, and running the wrong one costs a pump or an engine. Compressor fluid keeps rotary-screw and reciprocating pumps sealed, cool and free of varnish: mineral CP Genoil M mineral fluid, full-synthetic Genoil S Ultra and Paroil S Xtreme for high ambient heat, and PAO-based Kaeser S460 for rotary screws. The diesel engines under towable units take their own oil, with Gencool Green coolant for Stage 3b and Tier 4 machines. Air tools take breaker and hammer air-oil metered through an inline lubricator. Compressor Fluid: Mineral or Synthetic
Mineral fluid handles standard duty at a lower cost per gallon. Synthetics buy longer drain intervals and hold up in heat — Genoil S, Genoil S Ultra and Paroil S Xtreme are formulated for high ambient temperature, with oxidation resistance, fast water separation, anti-foam control and seal and paint compatibility. Kaeser S460 is a PAO blend, 75–80% poly alpha olefin with poly ester and hydrogenated iso-paraffin. Run what the compressor OEM specifies.

Engine Oil, Coolant and 2-Stroke
Towable compressors and generators need engine oil as well as compressor fluid. Paroil E Extra is a synthetic diesel oil built for compressor and generator engines with particle filters; Genoil 15W-40 is the mineral multigrade, and Genoil 5W-40 is fully synthetic to API SN/CF and ACEA A3/B4. Vanair 10W-30 covers Vanair engine-driven units. Gas breakers and other 2-stroke tools take Atlas Copco 2-stroke oil or CP Mixolene.
Hydraulic, Gear and Bio Oils
Hydraulic power packs run on hydraulic bio-oil or Atlas Copco bio hydraulic oil, both biodegradable and lower toxicity for spill-sensitive ground. Paroil E Mission Green is free of zinc and phosphorus for the same reason, and Powerolene lubricates eccentric gears and transmissions under heavy load.
Common Questions
Which oil does my air compressor take? Follow the OEM spec. Rotary-screw and reciprocating units take compressor fluid, not engine oil — mineral for standard duty, synthetic for heat and long drain intervals. Engine oil goes in the diesel that drives a towable compressor, never in the airend.
Can I run hydraulic oil in an air compressor? No. Hydraulic fluid is built to transmit power in a closed circuit; compressor fluid has to separate water, resist oxidation at airend temperature and release entrained air. Keep hydraulic oil in the power pack and compressor fluid in the compressor.
What oil do air tools take? Pneumatic tool oil, fed into the air line rather than poured in the inlet. Breaker and hammer air-oil suits percussion tools; meter it with a line oiler so nothing runs dry. Percussion drills take rock drill and anti-icing oil instead.
What is the difference between Genoil and Paroil? Both are Chicago Pneumatic lines and both span more than one job. On this page Genoil M, S and S Ultra are compressor fluids while Genoil Engine Performance and 5W-40 are engine oils; Paroil S and S Xtreme are compressor lubricants while Paroil E Extra is a diesel engine oil. Read the label, not the family name.
