A tool balancer takes the weight of a hanging tool off the operator’s arm and puts it on the overhead rail — the standard fix for shoulder fatigue on assembly, grinding and fastening stations. Chicago Pneumatic covers the load range in one family, from the CP9911 at 0.8 to 2.2 lb up to the CP9971 at 198.4 to 231.5 lb. Light and mid models run a stainless steel cable on an inert spring drum with adjustable weight and height limits, an antifriction cable guide and a safety suspension. Sizing a Balancer
Weigh what hangs: tool, socket or disc, whip hose, any fixture. Pick the model whose band brackets that number, not one that starts at it — a load at the bottom of a band gets pulled out of the hand, one at the top sags. Bands overlap on purpose: 4.4 to 8.8 lb is served by both the CP9921 and the CP9936, so the choice comes down to features.

Standard, Stop and Locking Models
Three constructions run through the line. Standard models, CP9911 to CP9940, balance the tool anywhere in the stroke on an inert spring drum. Stop models, CP9946 to CP9950, add a travel stop at the same capacities. Locking models from the CP9954 up hold the load at any height, add a safety lock against drops and hang on an upper rotating hook.
Common Questions
Are these pneumatic balancers? No. Despite the trade shorthand, these are spring-drum retractors — no air supply, nothing to plumb. They hang from a rail or jib and pay out cable against a spring.
What size balancer do I need for a 12 lb grinder? Add the disc, guard and whip hose, then take the band that brackets the total. Around 12 to 14 lb that is the CP9938 at 13.2 to 17.6 lb. Hang it over the grinder station, not off to one side.
Are the cables steel? Stainless steel throughout the line, over an antifriction guide on the standard models. Inspect cable and safety suspension on a schedule; a frayed cable on a 100 lb balancer drops it.
What hangs from one? Anything held all shift: grinders, impact wrenches, nutrunners, screwdrivers. No bail on the tool? Add a suspension ring from small tooling accessories.
