The chipping hammer clay spade puts a 4-1/2 in. digging blade on a pneumatic chipping hammer, cutting through clay, compacted soil and brittle material in spots too tight for a full-size digging tool. Available in .580 hex or .680 round shanks with oval or round collars, it comfortably handles trenching for pipe and cable, footings and shallow foundations, landscaping cuts and confined-space excavation.

A spade on a light chipping hammer is the precision option: its sharpened edges scrape and pry as well as cut, so it shapes garden beds and berms as readily as it opens a utility trench. For production digging with a dedicated tool, step up to our clay and trench diggers and the same shank system runs the rest of our chipping hammer steel when the digging turns to chipping.

  • 4-1/2 in. blade digs, pries and scrapes clay, hard dirt and brittle materials
  • Shank options: .580 in. hex or .680 in. round; oval or round collar retainers
  • Sharpened edges slice compacted soil and scrape surfaces clean
  • Suits confined spaces where full-size spades and shovels cannot work
  • Applications: trenching for pipes and cables, footings, landscaping, soil conditioning
  • Stocked by Crowder Supply in Denver in all four shank and collar configurations

Clay Spade FAQ

Will this clay spade fit my chipping hammer?
It is offered in .580 in. hex and .680 in. round shanks, each with an oval or round collar four configurations. Match both the shank and the collar style to your hammer’s chuck and retainer before ordering.

Does it fit electric or SDS demolition hammers?
No. These spades are made for pneumatic chipping hammers with .580 hex or .680 round chucks; SDS and electric-hammer spade bits use different shank systems.

Clay spade or a dedicated clay digger which do I need?
The spade turns a light chipping hammer into a precise digging tool for tight spots and occasional trenching. For production digging all day, a dedicated clay and trench digger is the better tool the chipping hammer buyer’s guide covers where each setup makes sense.
