The short version
Two hand-held post pullers. The PL-3 is hydraulic — less effort per pull, better for long days and deep-set post. The MP-3 is a manual lever unit with nothing to service, and it comes with the chain and grabber. Both pull T-post, fence post, ground rod, sign post and wood post. For solar pile or guardrail, you want the carrier-mounted pile puller instead.

Post Puller Questions
How do you pull a ground rod out of the ground?
Clamp a post grabber onto the rod as low as you can reach, hook it to the puller, and lift straight up. Ground rods are driven eight feet deep and grip hard along their whole length, so leverage matters more than brute force – a lever or hydraulic puller breaks them loose without bending the rod or digging. Both Rhino pullers handle ground rod with the standard post grabber.
What is the difference between the PL-3 and the MP-3?
The PL-3 is hand-operated hydraulic with a 17 in. pulling stroke – less effort per pull, better on long days and deep-set post. The MP-3 is a manual lever unit at 41 lb with nothing to service, and it ships with the chain assembly and post grabber included. Both pull the same range of post; the choice is effort versus simplicity. The MP-3 is the mechanical post puller of the pair — no cylinder, no cable, nothing to fail in the cold.
What can these pull?
T-post, fence post, ground rod, sign and u-channel post, metal post, wooden post including 4×4, pole and tent stake. The standard post grabber opens 4-3/8 in. wide by 2-1/2 in. deep, which covers most of what a fence or sign crew meets. The panel post grabber reaches 1-5/8 in. line posts between temporary fence panels.
Can I pull sign posts with these?
Yes. A hydraulic sign post puller is one of the most common uses – u-channel and square sign post come out cleanly with the standard grabber, and the panel grabber handles the narrower profiles. For break-away anchor systems, pull the post first and assess the anchor separately.
What about solar piles, guardrail post and anything bigger?
That is past hand-held. Rhino’s pile puller kit mounts to the Solar Pro, Guardrail Pro and Drive Master XL and gives 2,000 lb of vertical pull with a 1 ton lift plate clamp, with vibratory assist on the guardrail configuration. Do I need the post grabber, or is it included?
The MP-3 includes both the chain assembly and the post grabber. The PL-3 does not – the grabber is ordered separately, which lets you pick the jaw that matches your post. Most crews start with the standard 071040 grabber and add the panel grabber if they work temporary fence.
Do you rent post pullers?

How much force do they actually apply?
Enough that the limiting factor is normally the post, not the tool. The MP-3 chain assembly is rated with a 3.5 ton grab hook and a 3 ton swivel hook, and the PL-3 uses hydraulics to multiply hand effort over a 17 in. stroke. Pull straight up – angling the pull bends post and loads the grabber sideways.
