Drill Steel Adaptors
Adapters and couplings let one drill string carry mismatched threads — rod to rod, rod to shank, shank to bit — without rebuilding the string or buying new steel. A threaded coupling is female on both ends and joins two male rods of the same thread; a female-to-female coupling adapter does the same across two different threads, like H55 to R63. A stud rod adapter is male at both ends in H55, R25, R32, R51, T38, T45 and T51, and a bit adapter steps the thread at the working end, GT60 to T51 among them. Thread types run rope, T, Titan and Williams from 25 mm to 75 mm, machined in Denver from 4140 or 8620 tooling steel and heat treated to OEM specs, so they fit extension rods and rock drill bits across systems. Four Ways to Join a String
Sort adapters by the gender of the two ends before you worry about thread. Female to female — couplings and coupling adapters — joins two male rod ends, same thread or different. Male to male — stud rods, also called subs — links two female ends. Male to female — bit adapters and the threaded sleeve, R25 to R32 — steps the thread at the working end, which is where the rock drill bits buyer’s guide is worth a read. Gender first, then the two threads, then length.

Steel, Heat Treat and Turnaround
The joint sees the same impact energy as the rod, so these are machined from 4140 or 8620 alloy tooling steel and heat treated to meet or exceed OEM hardness. They fit rock drills from Atlas Copco, Epiroc, Sandvik, Furukawa and TEI among others. The 4140 quick-coupling program typically turns in three to five days rather than six weeks. The 1 in. NC to R38 adaptor ships without heat treat — check that listing first.
Common Questions
What is a drill sub adapter? A sub is a short threaded adapter joining two components a string cannot otherwise connect. Here they are listed by function — coupling adapters, stud rods, bit adapters — and named by the two threads they bridge.
What is the difference between a coupling and a coupling adapter? A coupling joins two male ends of the same thread; a coupling adapter joins two male ends of different threads. Both are female on both ends. Reach for the adapter when the rod and the striking bar or bit are in different systems.
Can you cut a thread you do not list? Usually yes. Rope, T, Titan and Williams threads are cut from 25 mm through 75 mm, custom sizes included. Send the two threads, each end’s gender and the length.
Do you carry hole savers? Yes — bell and spear hole savers sit with the drill steel and extension rods.
How quickly do these ship? Orders for in-stock drill steel adaptors placed by 4 PM Eastern ship the same day from our Denver warehouse. Stock varies by size, so confirm with us before ordering if you’re working to a deadline.
