A receiver tank is stored compressed air. It smooths the pressure swings that make tools feel weak, stops a compressor short-cycling itself to death, and gives entrained water a cool place to condense before it reaches the hose. What does an air receiver tank actually do?
Three things. It stores compressed air so short, heavy demands are met from the tank instead of from the compressor, which keeps line pressure from sagging. It lets the compressor run in longer, cooler cycles instead of starting and stopping constantly, which is what wears a compressor out. And because compressed air cools as it sits in the tank, water condenses out at the drain instead of travelling down the hose into your tools.
What size receiver tank do I need?
A common shop rule of thumb is roughly 4 gallons of receiver per CFM of compressor output for reciprocating machines, less for rotary screws that run continuously. But the real driver is your duty cycle: a plant with a big intermittent draw — a blow-off station, a bank of breakers, an air-driven pump — wants more storage than the rule suggests. Horizontal or vertical?
Vertical tanks use less floor space and put the drain at the low point of a small footprint, which suits a shop corner. Horizontal tanks are easier to mount on a skid or a trailer and sit under low ceilings. Weights are close either way — a 120 gallon runs 311 lb horizontal and 368 lb vertical — and both are rated 200 psi.
Are these tanks rated for 200 psi?
Yes, all six configurations are 200 psi vessels. That covers standard shop and jobsite pressures with margin. If your application runs above 200 psi, call us before ordering — that is a different vessel.
Do I need a receiver tank if I already have an air manifold?
They solve different problems. The manifold distributes and steadies air at the point of work, in 2.5 to 60 gallon sizes. The receiver stores air at the compressor, in 80 to 400 gallons. If your compressor short-cycles or your pressure collapses when two tools run together, you want the receiver. If you are running one hose to four operators, you want the manifold.
How often should I drain the tank?
Daily is the usual practice on a working compressor, more often in humid weather. Water sitting in a receiver corrodes it from the inside and eventually carries into the air system. An automatic drain is a cheap addition if nobody remembers to do it — ask us and we will spec one.
How do receiver tanks ship?
