Texas Pneumatic Chisel Scalers, Needle Scalers & Scabblers
The widest sub-family in the Texas Pneumatic line: lever and push throttle chisel and needle scalers from $225, long-reach bodies for tile and non-skid removal, combination kits, and the S1 and T3 piston scalers with optional Rexalloy or carbide-tipped pistons.
The short version
Three different jobs live on this page. A chisel scaler drives one chisel and cuts coating, weld spatter and light concrete. A needle scaler drives a bundle of needles that conform to a contoured surface, which is what you want for rust and mill scale in corners, around welds and on fittings. A piston scaler — the S1 and T3 — pounds a forged steel body against the surface to strip rust, paint, cement and industrial coatings from steel, or to rough concrete before resurfacing. All three come in lever, push and coke-oven throttle forms and vacuum attachments are available. Comparing brands? See the all-brands chisels, needle scalers and scabblers category.
Chisel scalers

Texas Pneumatic TX1B Chisel Scaler
The smallest and fastest chisel scaler in the range, and the single Texas Pneumatic tool Crowder ships the most units of. Lever or push throttle, with a long-reach body available for work you cannot get close to.
4,600 BPM · 12 CFM at 90 psi · lever, push or long reach

Texas Pneumatic TX182 Chisel Scaler
A step up in body length and mass from the TX1B, in standard 10-1/2 in or long reach. The middle of the chisel scaler range.
13 CFM at 90 psi · 10-1/2 in standard or long reach

Texas Pneumatic TX456 Chisel Scaler
The heaviest chisel scaler body, in lever or push throttle. Slower cycling than the TX1B but more energy behind each blow.
4,300 BPM · 13 CFM at 90 psi · lever or push throttle
Needle scalers

Texas Pneumatic TX1B Needle Scaler
Six configurations: lever or push throttle, 5 in or 7 in needles, 2 mm or 4 mm needle gauge, and a long-reach body. The most-configurable needle scaler TPT builds.
4,600 BPM · 12 CFM · 5 in, 7 in, 2 mm or 4 mm needles

Texas Pneumatic TX182 Needle Scaler
Heavier body than the TX1B, in 5 in or 7 in needle length. A vacuum attachment with case is available for this model where dust capture matters.
4,000 BPM · 13 CFM at 90 psi · 5 in or 7 in needles

Texas Pneumatic TX456 Needle Scaler
The heavy needle scaler in the range, single lever-throttle configuration.
Lever throttle · heavy-duty body
Combination kits and long reach

Texas Pneumatic TX182 Chisel / Needle Scaler Kit
Both heads in one purchase, so a single tool covers cutting and conforming work. Cheaper than buying the two tools separately.
Chisel head and 5 in needle head · 13 CFM

Texas Pneumatic TX456 Chisel / Needle Scaler Kit
The heavier combination kit, lever throttle, with both the chisel and needle heads.
Chisel head and needle head · lever throttle

Texas Pneumatic TX2 Long Reach Scaler
Heavy-hitting 2 in stroke in a 48 to 60 in body, built specifically for tile and non-skid removal where you need to work standing up. Lever or push throttle, standard or long reach.
2 in stroke · 18–21 CFM · 48–60 in long
Piston scalers

Texas Pneumatic S1 Single Piston Scaler
A single forged-steel piston pounding the surface: strips rust, paint, cement and industrial coatings off steel, or roughs concrete before resurfacing. Eight builds covering bent handle, air cock valve and 151 Rexalloy piston in every combination.
4,000 BPM · 9 CFM at 90 psi · forged steel body

Texas Pneumatic T3 Triple Piston Scaler
Three pistons instead of one, at 5,200 BPM on 15 CFM — roughly triple the coverage per pass. Nine builds including carbide-tipped and Rexalloy piston options.
5,200 BPM · 15 CFM at 90 psi · carbide or Rexalloy pistons
Specialty tools

Texas Pneumatic TXAS1 Air Scribe
A carbide-tipped air scribe with adjustable speed on a flexible 8 ft hose with filter. Writes on steel, glass, plastic and wood.
Carbide tipped stylus · adjustable speed · 8 ft hose and filter

Texas Pneumatic TX456 Tomato Stake Tool
The TX456 body configured to drive tomato stakes, with a straight or flared tube.
4,300 BPM · 13 CFM · straight or flared tube

Scaler questions, answered
Chisel scaler, needle scaler or piston scaler?
A chisel scaler drives a single chisel and cuts — best on weld spatter, heavy deposits and anywhere you want a defined edge. A needle scaler drives a bundle of individual needles that conform to whatever shape they land on — best for rust and mill scale around welds, corners, fittings and rivets. A piston scaler pounds a wide forged body against the surface and covers area fastest — best for stripping large flat expanses of coating or roughing concrete.
Lever throttle or push throttle?
Lever throttle keeps the tool running while you hold the lever and is the usual choice for continuous work. Push throttle requires you to press the tool into the work, which some operators prefer for control and which limits accidental running. Coke-oven throttle models are also built by the factory and are a quote item.
What is a Rexalloy piston?
An optional harder piston material for the S1 and T3 piston scalers, sold under the Rexalloy name, with carbide-tipped pistons also available on the T3. They last longer on abrasive coatings and concrete than the standard piston, which is why the option roughly doubles the tool price. If you are stripping occasional light coating, you do not need them.
What is a scabbler?
A scabbler scarifies concrete — it chips the surface to open it up and create a bonding profile for a new topping, coating or protective system. On this page the piston scalers do that job, and the heavier chipping hammers cover it too. If you specifically need a multi-head scabbler, call 1-888-883-5144 and we will quote one.
How much air do scalers use?
Very little compared with the rest of the percussion line: 9 CFM for the S1 piston scaler, 12 to 13 CFM for the chisel and needle scalers, 15 CFM for the T3, and 18 to 21 CFM for the long-reach TX2. A shop compressor will run any of them.
Can I capture the dust?
Yes on the TX182 needle scaler — there is a vacuum attachment with a carrying case built for it. Vacuum attachments are available for the wider chisel and needle scaler range as a factory option; call us with the model. If you are removing lead paint or working on a silica-generating surface, talk to us before you order.
What is the cheapest way into the range?
The TX1B chisel scaler with lever throttle at $225 is the entry point, and it is a genuinely capable tool at 4,600 BPM on 12 CFM — it is the model we sell the most units of. Add needles or a needle head later if the work calls for it.
What is a tomato stake tool?
The TX456 body fitted with a tube instead of a chisel, used to drive tomato stakes in agricultural work. Straight or flared tube. It is a real product and it does exactly what the name says.
Rust, coating or concrete?
Tell us the surface, the area and the coating. We will tell you whether you want a chisel, a needle bundle or a piston scaler — and whether you need the Rexalloy option.
