The short version
Choosing a TXCH is three decisions. Stroke: 2 in for fine work and weld slag, 3 in for general chipping, 4 in for heavier scaling and concrete. Bushing: .580 hex or .680 round, whichever matches the chisels you own. Retainer: the 4-bolt version at $740 ships as a kit with a lubricator, hose whip, quick-change retainer and a 12 in moil point and flat chisel; the standard oval-collar version at $840 to $878 is the simpler traditional build. The stroke sets how hard each blow lands. Air consumption barely moves across the range — 32 to 35 CFM — so the choice is about the work, not the compressor. Every model is offered in .580 hex or .680 round bushing, and in 4-bolt ball-retainer or standard oval-collar form.

What stroke length should I choose?
Stroke sets the energy per blow. A 2 in stroke gives you a fast, controllable tool for weld slag, flash removal and casting cleanup. A 3 in stroke is the general-purpose middle and the size most shops buy. A 4 in stroke hits hardest for heavy scaling and light concrete work. Air consumption only varies by 3 CFM across the whole range, so the compressor rarely decides this for you.
What is the difference between the 4-bolt and standard models?
The 4-bolt uses a ball-type retainer and spring and is sold as a kit: lubricator, hose whip, quick-change retainer, a 12 in moil point and a flat chisel, all for $740. The standard model uses a traditional oval collar retainer and spring and lists at $840 to $878 for the tool. If you are buying your first one, the 4-bolt kit is better value; if you are replacing one in a fleet, match what the crew already uses.
Hex or round bushing?
Match the chisels you own. .580 hex is the most common in North American shops; .680 round appears widely too. The price is identical either way, so the only wrong answer is the one that does not fit your steel. Send us a photo of a chisel shank if you are unsure.
How much air does a chipping hammer use?
32 to 35 CFM at 90 psi depending on model. That is modest enough that a decent shop compressor will run one continuously, but three operators on one machine will still need an air manifold to keep the pressure honest.
Chipping hammer or needle scaler?
A chipping hammer drives a single chisel and removes material. A needle scaler drives a bundle of needles that conform to a contoured surface, which is what you want for rust and mill scale in corners, welds and around fittings. Many shops keep both.
What about silica dust?
If you are chipping concrete, respirable crystalline silica is in scope under OSHA 1926.1153. The TX-DCS collectors capture at the tool through a cyclonic pre-separator and a HEPA filter, and can sit up to 30 ft from the work.
