Vanair Portable Gas Air Compressors

Gas-driven compressors put jobsite air on the service body instead of behind the truck — no tow, no trailer plate, and air on demand for utility, fence, and mobile-repair crews. The belt-driven Vanair Viper G60, G70, and G80 rotary screws all run a 25 hp Honda iGX800 EFI engine in a 440 lb deck-mount package, spanning 60 CFM at 150 psi to 80 CFM at 100 psi. The direct-drive Kaeser Mobilair M17 makes 60 CFM at 100 psi from a 17.4 hp Honda GX630. For intermittent air, the Vanair PRO 35 carries a 30-gallon receiver and the Air-N-Arc 150 adds welding and a generator. Shop the Vanair Viper gas line, size it with the air compressor buyer’s guide, or step up to diesel-driven compressors.

Gas or Diesel for a Service Truck

Gas suits work where the compressor lives on the truck and runs in bursts — light, quick to start, and small enough to deck-mount behind the cab. The Viper gas units weigh 440 lb and the G80 measures 39 x 21 x 30 in., so they fit a utility body with no trailer to pull or license. Once a crew needs air all shift, or more than 80 CFM at once, a towable diesel machine is the right buy. Both drives sit under air compressors.

Gas Air Compressor Comparison

Rotary-screw units hold their rated output continuously; the reciprocating machines fill a receiver tank and suit intermittent air. Compare output at the pressure your tools actually need, not peak CFM alone.

Engines, Starting and Cold Weather

All three Viper gas models run the 25 hp Honda iGX800 with electronic fuel injection, which Vanair specifies for cold-weather starting, uniform rpm under load, and lower fuel burn than a carbureted engine. The Kaeser M17 turns a 17.4 hp Honda GX630 V-twin at 2,300–3,300 rpm at full load, built around Kaeser’s SIGMA PROFILE airend in a rotomolded cabinet. Below freezing, add the cold-weather option for Viper Gas or the anti-icing kit that dries the air before it can freeze the line.

Keeping a Gas Unit in Service

Gas compressors run on an hour meter. Rotary screws take a synthetic rotary screw fluid; the piston machines take a separate reciprocating compressor oil, and swapping them shortens airend life. Bundled service kits cover scheduled filter and fluid intervals, and compressor accessories add aftercoolers, de-icer, reservoir tanks, and DC converters. Ships from Denver.

Common Questions

What will a gas powered air compressor run? At 60–80 CFM the Viper gas units and the Kaeser M17 handle impact and tire tools, chipping hammers, blow-down, and field repairs off the truck. A crew running paving breakers or rock drills continuously needs more air than gas delivers.

Is there a 110 CFM gas air compressor? Not in this range. The gas lineup stops at 80 CFM with the Viper G80, so 110 CFM and up means a towable or truck-mount diesel — see the diesel compressor range and the sizing guide for what each machine feeds.

Rotary screw or reciprocating? A rotary screw holds rated CFM continuously, which is why the Viper and Mobilair units suit steady air. A reciprocating unit like the tank-fed PRO 35 fills a 30-gallon tank and works best in bursts — tire work, impacts, blow-off.

Can one machine give me air and welding? Yes. The all-in-one Air-N-Arc 150 packs a 20 CFM compressor, 150 A DC CC/CV welder, 5 kW generator, and 12/24V battery boost into one underdeck unit. Boost cables and weld leads sell separately; more Vanair all-in-one power systems are on the brand page.
