Mining

Underground crews reorder the same short list every month: something to pin the back, something to drive it, something to bar down loose rock, and steel to drill the next round. That is the mining supply list this page carries. Split set bolts in 33 to 46 mm diameters and 18 to 144 in. lengths friction-lock into a drilled hole with no grout and no cure time, seat against a split set plate in 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 in., and come back out with a pull collar. Resin ground gets the roof bolt driver. Bar down with aluminum scaling bars from 4 to 20 ft, then drill the round with integral drill steel and restock from drill steel & bits. New to the systems? Split Sets and Ground Support

A split set is a friction bolt: a slotted steel tube driven into a hole drilled slightly under its diameter. It squeezes going in and pushes back against the rock the moment it seats, so support is immediate — nothing to mix or cure. Bolts run 33 to 46 mm and 18 to 144 in., galvanized on request; plates are 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 in. by .16 in. thick with 33, 39, or 46 mm holes. For surface anchoring and soil nailing, see soil stabilization.

Choosing a Split Set Driver

Two things pick the driver: how it connects to your drill or bolter, and the split set diameter it noses into. Length decides how far into the heading you can reach.

DriverConnects bySplit set sizeOverall length
One piece driver7/8 x 4-1/4 or 1 x 4-1/4 in. hex shankHex, 33–46 mm, 39 or 46 mm bulb nose13–54 in.

T13 Tamrock driverTamrock T13, 1-7/8 in. nose39 or 46 mm24 or 27-3/4 in.

Nose length varies too — 1-3/8 to 2-3/4 in. on the hex shank head, 1-1/2 to 4 in. on the threaded head, which is also made in custom sizes. Send us your shank or thread and bolt diameter and we will match it.

Scaling Bars and Getting Them Shipped

Aluminum scaling bars run 4 to 20 ft with hardened tips, light enough to bar down backs and ribs all shift. Anything over 96 in. must move LTL, and mine and quarry deliveries draw handling charges that on small orders beat the price of the bars. The split option fixes that: we cut the bar to a UPS-shippable length and fit a machined steel joint so it assembles at the face — available on any aluminum bar over 7 ft. Pipe-bar crews rebuild the working end with offset, straight, and point chisels for 3/4 in. Sched 40 and 1 in. Sched 80.

Drill Steel, Bits and Gauging

Integral steel forges bit and rod into one piece — 7/8 x 4-1/4 or 1 x 4-1/4 in. shanks, 11 through 17 series, 28 to 45 mm, 24 in. to 252 in. long. Detachable bits press onto an 11° taper instead: a 1 in. head cross bit for broken ground, a 1-1/4 in. head button bit for hard abrasive rock. Gauge the taper with a taper gauge before seating, and pull a stuck bit with a bit knocker. Denver-made NC coupling adapters tie 1 in. NC into R32, R38, or T38 strings; more in rock drill bits.

Drills, Spinners and Mucking Tools

The BBC 34W Leopard leg drill is the all-rounder: 2,280 BPM on a 3-5/16 in. piston, riflebar rotation, matched to a BMT51 or ALF71 pusher leg — more legged work in jackleg drills. A nut spinner takes drive ends from 7/8 x 3-1/4 hex to 1 x 6-1/4 hex plus R25F, R32, R32F and T38F, with nut ends from 1-1/8 in. square to 46 mm. For threaded bar, use a DYWIDAG shanked spinner in sizes 6 through 11 or a female-to-female spinner in R25 to R38. Muck out with the 4.25 lb Finnhoe MK3 scoop.

Common Questions

What is a split set and how does it hold? It is a friction rock stabilizer — a slotted steel tube driven into a hole drilled a little smaller than the tube. It compresses and pushes outward along its full length, gripping the instant it is in. No grout, no resin, no waiting.

Which split driver do I need? Match the shank or thread your machine takes to the bolt diameter it has to nose into. A 39 mm bolt on an R32 drill wants the threaded head; a 7/8 in. hex machine wants the one-piece or hex shank head. Pick length off the table above.

Can you ship a 20 ft scaling bar? Yes, but anything over 96 in. moves LTL, and mine and quarry deliveries add handling on top. On small quantities that freight can beat the price of the bars, which is why most crews take the split and assemble on site.

What threads do the mining coupling adapters come in? 1 in. NC on one end and R32, R38, or T38 on the other, in 3, 5, 7.5, 24, and 30 in. lengths, heat-treated or not, plus a fixed NC 1 in. to T45. Other thread families are bridged in drill steel adapters. In-stock items ordered by 4 PM ET ship the same day.
