Breaker Post, Pipe and Tamper Driving Tools

A paving breaker already makes the blows — these tools point them at a post instead of a slab. A large taper detachable shank goes into the breaker chuck and accepts a round cup pipe driver for 1-1/4 in. to 4 in. pipe ID, a round pin driver, a square post driver, a tamping pad, or a sheathing driver shoe. Shanks are made in the USA in every common hex size from 7/8 in. to 1-1/4 in. for 20 to 90 lb breakers. For the breakers, see paving breakers and jackhammers; for hand work, see manual drive caps.

Everything Rides on the Shank

The shank is the interface between the breaker chuck and the driving head; order it first, in your hex size. Once a head is fitted to a large taper shank the joint is permanent, so crews running several heads buy a shank per head. The U-channel pipe driver shank is the exception: a two-piece system that pairs with a separate pipe driver cup and fits all sizes of highway channel post.

Pick the Head for the Post

Heads are sized by the inside dimension of the post or pipe; the drive nose runs about 1/32 in. under that.

Common Questions

What size drive shank do I need? The one matching your breaker chuck. Shanks run 7/8 in. through 1-1/4 in. hex for 20 to 90 lb class tools; the size is stamped on the tool.

Can a jack hammer run a tamper? Yes. The pads suit hammers up to the 90 lb class and pair with a large taper shank for trench, slope, base, and asphalt patch compaction. For dedicated tools, see backfill tampers.

What is a pipe driving cap for? It caps the open end of pipe or channel so the blow spreads across the rim instead of mushrooming it.

How do these differ from breaker driving tools? These mount on a shank and cup the post; one-piece paving breaker driving tools go straight into the chuck. Sizing the breaker is covered in the paving breaker buyer’s guide.

How fast can you ship? Crowder Supply ships from Denver, and in-stock items ordered by 4 PM Eastern go out the same day. Stock moves, so call or email if you need a firm ship date on a specific hex shank drive tools before you order.
