What size shop press do I need?
Size to the heaviest interference fit you actually press, then buy headroom — a press working at its limit is slow and hard on the frame. Wheel bearings and bushings on cars and light trucks live happily at 15-25 tons; truck and equipment work wants 50; axle and track work is where the 75 and 100-ton pump-driven machines earn their price.
What is an air hydraulic jack and why do fleet shops use them?
A hydraulic jack whose pump runs on shop air instead of a handle. Slide the CP85 under the axle, connect air, and it lifts a laden truck without anyone pumping — faster, and no operator fatigue on repeated lifts. Capacities run 33 to 110 tons with a low-profile version for minimal clearances. Stands still take the load before anyone goes under.
Click-type or electronic torque wrench?
Click-type CP89s are the durable, affordable standard: set the value, pull to the click. The electronic eTorque adds a digital readout, multiple units, and angle measurement — necessary when the spec reads “X ft-lb plus Y degrees”, common on modern engines and structural bolts. Both need periodic calibration; both beat an impact gun guessing.
Can I torque wheels with an impact wrench?
Snug with the gun, finish with the wrench. An impact wrench cannot hold a documented torque value — even a torque-limited gun only caps the maximum. The working pattern is a TL gun from the impact wrenches page to run nuts down, then a CP89 to pull each one to spec in a star pattern. That combination is what stops both stud breakage and comeback wheels.
Are jack stands really necessary if the jack is rated for the load?
Yes. A jack is a lifting device, not a holding device — seals weep, valves creep, and air pressure fluctuates. The rule in every professional bay: the vehicle rests on stands (or the crane load on its base) before any part of a person goes underneath. Stand capacity should match or exceed the jack that did the lifting.
