The short version

Pick the drive size first: it has to match your sockets and the fastener. 3/8 in. for brackets and small fasteners, 1/2 in. for wheels and general service, 3/4 in. for trucks and equipment, 1 in. and #5 spline for heavy wheels and structural bolts, and 1-1/2 in. and up for mining and rail. Torque-limited (TL) models cap output so wheel studs survive. Browse every model in the impact wrenches category, pair one with an air ratchet for the tight spots, or call 1-888-883-5144 and we will size one against your compressor.

Compact 3/8 in. and Light 1/2 in. Impact Wrenches

Sub-4 lb guns for brackets, small fasteners, and assembly work where a big impact would shear the bolt.

Chicago Pneumatic CP7722 3/8 in. drive air impact wrench

The bench and service-bay class

Everything here is light enough to run one-handed all day and tuned for fasteners up to about 5/8 in. The composite-housing models keep weight near 2.5 lb; the CP6300 industrial pistol adds a governed motor for production duty.

The tire-bay and fleet workhorses

If the shop owns one impact gun, it is a 1/2 in. The CP7748TL is the tire-shop pick: full loosening power, but tightening capped at 103 ft-lb so studs are never over-torqued ahead of the torque wrench. The CP8222 family covers 3/8 to 3/4 in. drive from one value-priced platform.

Chicago Pneumatic CP797 1 in. drive air impact wrench

Heavy wheels, structural bolts, spline sockets

At this size the anvil choice matters as much as the torque figure: #5 spline anvils lock into spline sockets for mining and OTR wheel service, and 6 in. extensions reach through wheel openings. The CP0611 tops the class at 1,800 ft-lb working torque.

Air Impact Wrenches — Common Questions

What size air impact wrench do I need?

Match the drive to the fastener, not the other way around. 3/8 in. handles brackets and fasteners to about 5/8 in.; 1/2 in. covers car and light-truck wheels, suspension, and driveline; 3/4 in. is for medium trucks, buses, and equipment; 1 in. and #5 spline handle OTR wheels, mining, and structural steel; 1-1/2 in. and up is specialist mill and rail territory. Buying bigger than the job wastes air and risks snapped fasteners — a torque-limited 1/2 in. gun is the right answer for most tire work.

How much air does a CP impact wrench use?

A 1/2 in. gun typically wants a compressor delivering around 4-5 CFM at 90 psi for intermittent service work; 3/4 and 1 in. guns want considerably more, and the 1-1/2 in. class is a dedicated-compressor tool. The exact CFM figure is on every product page. Undersized air shows up as a gun that rattles but will not break fasteners loose — check air supply before blaming the tool. Call 1-888-883-5144 and we will check a model against the compressor you already own.

What does torque limited (TL) mean on the CP7748TL and CP7782TL?

A TL gun has full power in reverse for breaking fasteners loose, but caps its forward (tightening) torque — 103 ft-lb on the CP7748TL, 325 ft-lb on the CP7782TL. That protects wheel studs from over-torque; you snug the nut with the gun and finish to spec with a torque wrench. Tire shops buy TL guns to stop stud breakage and warranty claims.

What is a #5 spline drive and when do I need it?

A #5 spline anvil is a splined output that locks into matching spline sockets rather than a square drive. Mining, OTR tire service, and some rail and military specs call for spline drive because the engagement will not round off under repeated heavy impacts. If your sockets are spline, order the spline anvil version — the CP797, CP7782, CP6120, and CP0611 all offer one.

Impact wrench or air ratchet — which do I need?

An impact wrench delivers hammer blows for breakaway torque — seized bolts, wheel nuts, structural fasteners. An air ratchet is for speed and access, not power: low-profile head, controlled torque, fits where an impact will not. Most bays run both. If the fastener has a torque spec, finish with a torque wrench either way.

Are friction ring and pin retainer sockets interchangeable?

The gun holds the socket differently: a friction ring (hog ring) lets you swap sockets fast, a pin retainer locks the socket on until you remove the pin — the safer choice overhead and on vibrating equipment. Several CP models sell in both versions at the same price, so pick by how you work. Impact-rated sockets are in bolting accessories.

Does Chicago Pneumatic make a cordless impact wrench?

Yes — the 18 V CP8854 series, sold on our cordless and electric tools page. It is built for in-field bolting where dragging a hose is not practical. On shop air, the pneumatic guns on this page are lighter and cheaper for the same torque.

Where can I buy Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench parts?

We supply genuine CP service parts — vanes, hammers, anvils, springs, and tune-up kits — through our parts lookup, and impact sockets and accessories in CP accessories. Have the model number off the housing when you call 1-888-883-5144.
