Chicago Pneumatic CP42 Series rivet hammers are compact pneumatic percussive tools for solid riveting in airframe and sheet metal work. Seven models types 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, 7X and 9X cover the majority of aluminum and steel rivet sizes used in aerospace metal structure repair, with strokes from 1.38 in. to 5.2 in. and blow rates from 2,850 down to 900 BPM as the types get heavier.
Aviation MRO, rail car and tank/trailer shops drive AN/MS solid rivets with these hammers, matched rivet sets and bucking bars. Every model feeds through a 1/4 in. NPT inlet on 5 to 12 CFM at 90 psi, with tool weights from 2.34 to 5.51 lb. Where a squeeze is the better process, the CP42 Series rivet squeezers are the companion tools, and CP988 Series riveters handle production riveting; for structural demolition and heavy rivet shearing, step up to full-size rivet busters. An in-line lubricator keeps any of them hitting to spec.
- Seven models covering types 1X through 9X: CP4281, CP4282, CP4283, CP4284, CP4285, CP4287 and CP4289

CP42 Rivet Hammer FAQ
Which CP42 type do I need?
The seven models run from type 1X (1.38 in. stroke, 2,850 BPM) up to 9X (5.2 in. stroke, 900 BPM). As the type number climbs, the stroke lengthens and each blow gets heavier, so lighter types suit the smaller rivets and the heavier types handle the larger AN/MS solid rivet sizes.
What air supply do CP42 rivet hammers need?
Types 1X through 4X draw 5 CFM and types 5X through 9X draw 12 CFM, all at 90 psi through a 1/4 in. NPT inlet well within the reach of a small shop compressor.
Rivet hammer or rivet buster what’s the difference?
A CP42 rivet hammer sets solid rivets with precision in airframe and sheet metal work. Shearing big structural rivets and heavy demolition call for a full-size tool like the CP rivet busters.
