What is a pneumatic clay digger?
A pneumatic clay digger — also called an air spade or air digger — is a hand-held percussion tool that drives a clay spade or digging chisel to break up ground too hard for a shovel: packed clay, shale, hardpan, and frozen ground. Utility crews use them to dig precisely around buried pipe and cable where an excavator is too risky, and to tunnel under foundations.
Are pneumatic diggers effective on frozen or extremely hard ground?
Yes — that is exactly what the M118 and M119 are built for. At 1,850 BPM they chip frozen ground and hardpan a shovel bounces off. For solid rock, step up to a paving breaker or a rock drill; for everything between soil and rock, a digger is the right tool.
Is this the same thing as a trenching machine?
No — these are hand-held air tools, not ride-on or walk-behind trenchers. Crews choose hand diggers when the trench is short, tight, near utilities, or inside a structure where a machine cannot go — and pair them with the M131 backfill tamper to close the trench back up.
Clay digger vs trench digger — what is the difference?
Handle and posture. The D-handle M118 and M125 clay diggers work in any orientation — horizontal, vertical, overhead-adjacent. The T-handle M119 trench digger is longer (31 in.) and built for leaning into vertical trench cuts all day. Same steel, same chucks.
What steel do they take, and what air?
Chucks are 7/8 x 3-1/4 or 1 x 4-1/4 — the same shanks as our clay spades and digging chisels. Air draw is 34–42 CFM at 90 psi, so any small towable compressor runs one. Old part numbers: 5211 = M125, 5201/5202 = M118, 5203/5204 = M119.
