The short version

Start with your carrier. On a mini skid steer, the Drive Master is the fit — 525 lb, post to 10 ft. On a full-size skid steer over 10,000 lb, all three 800 ft-lb machines will mount: the Drive Master XL for mixed work, the Solar Pro for ground-mounted solar, the Guardrail Pro for highway guardrail.

Four Carrier-Mounted Pile Drivers

Same idea in four sizes and setups: a hydraulic hammer on an omni-adjustable mast, driving plumb pile off a machine you already own or rent.

One platform, three applications

The Drive Master XL, Solar Pro and Guardrail Pro are the same 800 ft-lb machine underneath — same hammer, same 3,000 lb frame, same omni-directional mast. What differs is the anvil, the adapter set and the working height each job needs. Buy the one that matches the work you do most, and add adapters for the rest.

Will My Machine Run One?

Check three things on your carrier: operating weight, auxiliary hydraulic flow, and whether you have a case drain line.

Operating weight

The three 800 ft-lb machines need a skid steer over 10,000 lb operating weight and over 3,000 lb rated operating capacity. The Drive Master needs only 1,000 lb machine weight and 800 lb lift.

Hydraulic flow and pressure

10.5 to 22.5 GPM at 1,740 to 2,320 psi for the big three — comfortably inside standard-flow skid steer range. The Drive Master runs on 5.3 to 7.9 GPM at 1,015 to 2,030 psi.

Three lines, including case drain

Pressure, return and case drain. The case drain returns internal hammer leakage to tank at low pressure — running without one, or teeing it into a pressurised return, damages seals.

Running a hand-held tool instead? See Rhino hydraulic post drivers, pneumatic post drivers and gas post drivers, or the full mounted post driver category.

Adapters, Guides and Kits

The anvil drives, the bottom guide holds the pile square. Match both to your pile profile.

Skid Steer Pile Driver Questions

What is a skid steer pile driver?

A skid steer pile driver is a hydraulic hammer on an adjustable mast that mounts to the quick-attach plate of a skid steer or mini skid steer. The carrier supplies the oil, the mast holds the pile plumb, and the hammer does the driving – so you set piles with a machine you already own instead of buying or hiring a self-propelled pile rig.

Which Rhino attachment do I need?

Start with the carrier. If you run a mini skid steer, the Drive Master is the only fit – 525 lb, 5.3 to 7.9 GPM, minimum machine weight 1,000 lb. If you run a full-size skid steer over 10,000 lb, you are choosing between the Drive Master XL for mixed work, the Solar Pro for ground-mounted solar, and the Guardrail Pro for highway guardrail.

What is the difference between the Drive Master XL, Solar Pro and Guardrail Pro?

They share the same 800 ft-lb hammer, the same 3,000 lb frame and the same omni-directional mast. What changes is the application setup: the Solar Pro carries a 10 x 7.25 in. anvil and the adapter range for solar supports up to 15 ft; the Guardrail Pro carries an 8 x 7.25 in. anvil for guardrail post to 8.5 ft, driving to about 21 in. above grade; the Drive Master XL is the general-purpose version of the same platform.

What skid steer do I need to run one?

For the three 800 ft-lb machines: more than 10,000 lb operating weight, more than 3,000 lb rated operating capacity, and three hydraulic lines – pressure, return and case drain. Flow of 10.5 to 22.5 GPM at 1,740 to 2,320 psi. The Drive Master needs far less: 1,000 lb machine weight, 800 lb lift capacity and 5.3 to 7.9 GPM.

Do I need a case drain line?

Yes, on the 800 ft-lb machines. A case drain returns internal leakage from the hammer directly to tank at low pressure. Running one without a case drain, or plumbing it into a pressurised return, will damage the motor seals. If your carrier does not have a case drain port, that is the first thing to sort out with your dealer.

Can it pull posts as well as drive them?

Yes, with the pile puller kit. It adds a 1 ton vertical lift plate clamp and safety shackle to the front of the mast, giving 2,000 lb of vertical pull – enough to remove most pile and post. On the Guardrail Pro it also brings vibratory assist, which matters on repair runs where posts have been in the ground for years. It comes off in minutes for transport.

How close to the ground can it drive?

The Drive Master drives to ground level. The Drive Master XL reaches 30 in. of grade as standard, or within 8 in. with the extended drive cap. The Guardrail Pro stops at roughly 21 in. above grade, which is the working height guardrail systems are set to.

How does this compare with a truck mounted guardrail post driver?

A truck mounted guardrail post driver is a dedicated machine: fast on long highway runs, but it is a second vehicle to buy, insure, licence and staff. A skid steer attachment turns a machine you already own into a guardrail pounder for a fraction of that, and goes places a truck cannot — behind barrier, on slopes, inside medians. If you are running guardrail every day of the year the truck wins on pure throughput; for repair crews, contractors and DOT yards the attachment usually makes better economic sense. We do not sell truck mounted units, so call us and we will give you a straight comparison.

What does a skid steer pile driver cost, and do you rent?

The Solar Pro and Guardrail Pro are priced on this page. The Drive Master and Drive Master XL are quoted, because the mounting plate and adapter set depend on your carrier and your pile. We sell rather than rent, and we supply rental fleets, solar EPCs and DOT contractors directly — as an authorized Rhino supplier, we can also quote custom adapters as part of the package.

What if my pile profile is not listed?

Rhino fabricates custom adapters, guides and anvil shapes to order. Send us the pile or post profile and dimensions and we will get a quote back with the right adapter and bottom guide.

How does it handle uneven ground?

That is what the omni-directional adjustment is for. The mast tilts 2 degrees right and 90 degrees left, plus 10 degrees forward and back, and the whole attachment shifts 10 in. front-to-back and 24 in. side-to-side. Two numbered leveling indicators let the operator plumb the pile without getting out of the machine. The attachment is also offset to the right so the operator can hold a straight line down a run.

Tell us your carrier and your pile

Machine make and model, auxiliary flow, and the pile or post profile you are driving. We will tell you which attachment fits, which adapter you need, and whether your hydraulics are up to it.
