Diesel, Gas or Hydraulic Drive
Three drives cover almost every jobsite. Diesel rotary screws tow behind a truck and hold high CFM all day, which is what breaking and drilling crews need. Gas units deck-mount and start fast for intermittent service work. Hydraulic-driven compressors take power from the truck’s own hydraulic system, so there is no second engine to fuel, service, or find room for — the reason utility fleets mount them underdeck.
Hydraulic and Underdeck Air
A hydraulic air compressor makes air off the vehicle’s hydraulic circuit instead of a dedicated gas or diesel engine. That frees deck space, removes a maintenance item, and gives the crew air whenever the truck is running. Vanair’s Reliant line covers the hydraulic side, and the Air N Arc power systems combine underdeck air with welding, a generator, and battery boost. Sizing Air to the Tools
Add up the CFM of every tool running at the same time, then leave margin for continuous work. Under-size the machine and tools lose speed and hitting power. Pressure matters as much as volume: the Viper G60 makes 60 CFM at 150 psi, while the G80 trades pressure for 80 CFM at 100 psi off the same 25 hp Honda engine. What is a hydraulic compressor? An air compressor driven by a hydraulic motor fed from the host vehicle or machine, rather than by its own engine or an electric motor. It needs no separate fuel or exhaust, so it suits underdeck service-truck installs — see Vanair Reliant units.
What is the best air compressor for a service truck? If the truck has hydraulics to spare, an underdeck hydraulic unit keeps the deck clear. If it does not, a deck-mount gas rotary screw at 60–80 CFM covers most field work. Match CFM to your heaviest two tools running together.
