Chicago Pneumatic Tool Lubrication
Air tools die from the inside when they run dry, and the three lubricants that keep them alive are all here. Motor oil goes into the lubricator on the FRL or straight down the inlet, and is listed as CPA1014 in 1 L, CPA1015 in 125 mL and CPA1016 in 5 L, so a squeeze bottle can live at the bench and a jug at the compressor. CP clutch oil in 591 mL and clutch grease serve impact and shut-off mechanisms, and Isoflex grease in a 1 kg tin handles gear cases. Hydraulic oil and grease guns round it out. Air Motor Oil
Air motor oil is a light oil that films the vanes, rotor and bearings, carries condensate out of the motor and stops the freeze-ups and internal rust that kill a pneumatic tool. Feed it through the line lubricator where there is one, or a few drops down the air inlet at the start of each shift where there is not. CP lists the same oil in 125 mL, 1 L and 5 L.
Clutch Oil and Grease
Impact mechanisms and shut-off clutches take a heavier grade than the motor does. CP lists clutch oil in a 591 mL bottle and a separate clutch grease, with Isoflex grease in 1 kg for gear cases and angle heads. Do not substitute motor oil in a clutch or a gear case — it is far too light, and on an impact wrench the hammer pays for it.

Common Questions
What oil goes in an air tool? A dedicated air tool or air motor oil — CPA1014, CPA1015 and CPA1016 are the CP references. Motor oil, ATF and penetrating oil are all wrong: too heavy, too detergent, or they attack the seals.
How often should I oil an air tool? Continuously through a line lubricator, or at the start of each shift and again after a long run if the tool has no oiler upstream. Percussive tools and vane motors want oil constantly; check the manual before oiling a sealed or clutch-fed tool.
Is this the same as rock drill oil? No. Handheld drills and breakers on a jobsite take a heavier, tackier rock drill oil fed by a hose oiler. The CPA oils here are for shop air tools. Spares and service kits are in the parts and diagrams hub.
