The short version

Pick by the post, then check the air. Every one of these is a portable, hand-held air operated post driver — the compressor is the only thing tying you down. PD-55 for T-post, ground rod and pipe to 3 in. PD-110 for 2–4 in. pipe, 4×4 wood and dock pile. PD-140 for guardrail and sheet pile. PD-200 when it is 6 in. pipe, 6×6 wood or 12 in. piling. The installer’s default for twenty years. Drives T-post, ground rod, tent stake, grape stake, delineator post, form pin and fence post up to 3-5/8 in. One moving part – a double-valve reciprocating piston – so there is very little to go wrong.

PD Kits: The Driver Plus Everything It Needs

A bare post driver will not drive anything. It needs a throttle valve to fire, an FRL to stay alive, hose to reach the post and oil to run on. Every kit below already has all four.

Hand-held, or carrier-mounted

Any Rhino pneumatic post driver can be hung with a chain or a strap from a mini excavator, skid steer, tractor, telehandler, forklift — anything on site strong enough to lift it. Nothing special is required to do it.

With the remote throttle valve, that is often the easier way to work: the machine carries the weight and holds the driver square while the operator steadies the post and runs the throttle from the ground. On long runs of sheet pile, guardrail or heavy pipe it takes the fatigue out of the job and keeps the post plumb.

What Air Compressor Does a Pneumatic Post Driver Need?

This is the question that decides whether the tool works. Take the tool draw and add roughly half again for hose loss and duty cycle — starve the air and the driver slows down long before it quits.

How much faster is the next size up?

Rhino’s own rule of thumb: if a PD-45 drives a post in two minutes, the PD-55 does it in one minute, the PD-110 in thirty seconds, and the PD-140 in fifteen. Estimates in moist, light to medium soil — but the ratio holds. Stepping up a model roughly halves the driving time, which is why high-volume fence and guardrail crews buy heavier than they think they need.

What two and a half minutes will tell you

Watch how little setup a pneumatic driver actually needs: connect the air, set the chuck on the post, and go. The clip runs the line from the PD-55 on fence work through the heavier machines on pipe and sheet pile.

Pay attention to two things — how fast the post goes down once the hammer is cycling, and how little the operator fights the tool. That is the 1,700 blows per minute doing the work instead of the person.

What is a pneumatic post driver?

A pneumatic post driver is a hand-held air hammer built to drive posts. Compressed air cycles a reciprocating piston that strikes the post through a master chuck, so one operator sets T-post, pipe, guardrail or sheet pile without an auger, a tractor, or a hydraulic power pack. Rhino’s PD line runs at 1,700 blows per minute on the PD-55 through PD-140, and 930 heavier blows on the PD-200. Crews call them air post drivers, air operated post drivers, pneumatic post pounders, fence post pounders and t post pounders — all the same tool.

What size air compressor do I need for a pneumatic post driver?

Take the tool draw and add roughly half again for hose loss and duty cycle. The PD-55 draws 42 CFM at 90 psi, so size to about 85 CFM. The PD-110 and PD-140 draw 64 CFM at 100 psi – size to about 130 CFM. The PD-200 draws 72 CFM, so plan on a 185 CFM tow-behind compressor. Undersize the air and the driver slows down long before it stops.

Which pneumatic post driver do I need?

Match it to the post. The PD-55 covers T-post, ground rod, delineator and pipe up to about 3 in. The PD-110 handles 2 in. to 4 in. pipe, 4×4 wood, dock and pin piles. The PD-140 is the guardrail and sheet pile tool. The PD-200 takes 6 in. pipe, 6×6 wood, H-column guardrail and 12 in. sheet piling.

What accessories are required?

Every pneumatic post driver needs a throttle valve kit and a filter-regulator-lubricator. The throttle valve kit ships with a 5 ft hose whip that suits a 7 ft post – add a foot of hose for every foot of post above that. Air tool oil is not optional on these; the FRL is what keeps the piston alive. All of it is in every PD kit, or shop the pieces under PD series accessories.

Air, gas or hydraulic – which should I choose?

Air gives you the highest blow rate and the lowest tool weight for the power, but you have to bring a compressor. Gas is self-contained and goes anywhere. Hydraulic runs off a power pack or a carrier. If you already tow a compressor for other tools, pneumatic is usually the cheapest way to add serious driving power.
