An air impact wrench runs down and breaks loose fasteners that no hand tool will move, hammering the anvil instead of loading the operator’s wrist. Chicago Pneumatic keeps two separate families here. Industrial Line or Vehicle Service?
CP draws this line sharply. Its industrial impact wrenches cover 179 to 18,400 ft-lb at 2,800 to 11,500 rpm free speed, 650 to 1,800 blows per minute, and 2.65 to 132 lb of tool. The vehicle-service line covers 75 to 2,500 ft-lb at 3,700 to 15,000 rpm and 1.17 to 35.7 lb. Structural steel, mill and mine maintenance, and flange bolting up to M56 or M72 — as on the CP6130 and CP6240 — belong to the industrial tools. Wheels, suspension, engines, and truck tires belong to the 7700 and 700 series.
Clutch Type Tells You the Joint
A two-jaw clutch, as in the CP6120, builds torque progressively and suits both hard and soft joints. A twin-hammer clutch in an oil bath is the hard-joint answer and needs less maintenance. Pinless rocking-dog mechanisms, used on the CP6910 and CP6920, keep vibration low at very high torque, and CP’s DYNA-PACT pin clutch runs in oil on the classic CP9541 series. For hazardous areas, the CP6728 composite range is ATEX certified and IP6 dust-proof.
Vehicle-Service Wrenches by Torque
On tire and fleet tools the number that matters is maximum torque in reverse — what breaks a nut loose. Forward torque is lower, and on the TL models deliberately capped.

Air, Anvils & Sockets
Air inlets run 1/4 to 1 in. across the line; a 1-1/2 in. industrial wrench will starve on a 3/8 in. whip hose. Anvils come in friction-ring and pin-retained versions — pick by how often you change sockets and how much you care about a socket walking off. Impact-rated sockets, extensions and spline adapters and clean, lubricated air through swivels, hoses and valves do more for tool life than anything else.
