Looking for CP shop and vehicle-service tools?

This page is Chicago Pneumatic Construction Tools. CP impact wrenches, ratchets, die grinders, sanders, drills, screwdrivers and workshop equipment are a separate division — and we stock all of it. CP7000 series air hammers and the RA and B20 scalers live here, with the chipping hammers.

CP Industrial & Workshop Tools

The short version

Breaking concrete with air on site? Start at the CP pneumatic paving breakers (30 to 90 lb class). No compressor on site? The gas-powered Red Hawk runs standalone. Working off a carrier or power pack? See the CP BRK hydraulic breakers. Drilling rock? The CP sinker drills run 9 to 60 lb class. Chipping, scaling or gasket work? Seventeen chipping and air hammers from $86, in .580 hex and .680 round for construction and 0.401 in. for shop work. Need the air to run them? CP portable compressors deliver 95 to 1,600 CFM. Need power, light or dry air on the same site? CP also builds portable generators, LED light towers and desiccant air dryers. Want every brand side by side instead of CP alone? Use the all-brands categories: paving breakers, rock drills, air compressors. Not sure? Call 1-888-883-5144 and describe the job.

CP Pneumatic Tools

Air-driven breakers, drills, hammers and tampers — the core of the Chicago Pneumatic construction line since 1901. Every tool below runs on a standard portable compressor; the CFM figure on each model tells you how big that compressor has to be.

Chipping Hammers & Air Hammers

Seventeen models from $86 to $1,076, in two families that are not interchangeable. Construction chipping hammers take .580 hex and .680 round steel, weigh 7 to 20 lb and run 20 to 33 CFM — concrete prep, scaling, gasket and weld work, light demolition. Light-duty air hammers take 0.401 in., 0.498 in., 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. hex shanks, weigh 2.4 to 4.9 lb and run 6.4 to 25 CFM — vehicle service, fabrication, foundry and precision scaling. CP 0004 Pneumatic Backfill Tamper

The largest butt in the CP tamper line at 6-1/4 in., running 780 BPM on 28 CFM. Covers ground faster per pass than the 5 in. tool while still fitting a standard utility trench.

Choose it when: You are compacting utility trench backfill in lifts and want the widest butt that still fits between the trench walls.

Key specs
Butt size6-1/4 in.

Clay & Trench Diggers

Long-barrel diggers with a clay spade for hardpan, frozen ground and hand-dug trench — lighter and faster than a paving breaker in soil.

Scabblers, Chisels & Needle Scalers

Surface preparation, split by substrate. Scabblers scarify concrete — laitance, coatings and high spots — with carbide pistons hitting straight down at 3,000 BPM on 27.5 CFM. Needle scalers strip rust, mill scale, slag and failed coating off steel without cutting into the parent metal, because the needles ride the contour instead of digging a line.

CP Gas-Powered Tools: the Red Hawk Platform

One gasoline-powered platform, three different machines, all on one page: the CP Red Hawk gas line. Red Hawk tools run with no compressor, no hoses and no power pack — which is the whole point on remote right-of-way, rail, and utility work where dragging air is not practical. Pick by what the tool actually does, not by size.

Chicago Pneumatic FAQ

Is Chicago Pneumatic the same company as Atlas Copco?

They are related but separate brands. Chicago Pneumatic was founded in 1901 and has been part of the Atlas Copco group since 1987; both brands are sold and serviced independently, with their own model lines, part numbers and dealers. We are a stocking dealer for both, so if a CP tool is on backorder we can usually cross you to the equivalent Atlas Copco machine and tell you honestly which one is the better buy that week.

Do you sell CP shop and vehicle-service air tools like the CP7769 impact wrench?

Yes, and we stock the full line. Chicago Pneumatic makes two very different families of tools, and we carry both. This page is CP Construction Tools: breakers, rock drills, chipping and air hammers, rivet busters, tampers, compressors and site power. The CP industrial and workshop division — impact wrenches, air ratchets, die grinders, angle grinders, sanders and polishers, drills, screwdrivers, riveting tools, air motors, cutting tools and shop equipment — has its own home at CP Industrial & Workshop Tools, with 179 tools and over 1,200 accessories and service parts. One exception worth knowing: the CP7000 series air hammers and the RA1, RA2, CP0456 and B20 scalers are catalogued industrial by the factory, but they do the same job as a chipping hammer, so we list them here alongside the construction hammers rather than making you cross two pages to compare them.

What is the difference between a construction chipping hammer and a light-duty air hammer?

Shank, weight and what the tool is trying to do. A construction chipping hammer takes .580 hex or .680 round steel, weighs 7 to 20 lb and draws 20 to 33 CFM: it is sized for concrete prep, heavy scaling, gasket and weld work and light demolition, and the steel is thick enough to take that abuse. A light-duty air hammer takes a 0.401 in., 0.498 in., 3/8 in. or 1/2 in. hex shank, weighs 2.4 to 4.9 lb and draws 6.4 to 25 CFM: it is for vehicle service, fabrication, foundry cleanup and precision scaling on castings and thin material, where a 13 lb hammer would deform the work. The shanks do not interchange, so the practical rule is to buy the family that matches the steel you already own. The one tool that blurs the line is the CP9362 — 7.4 lb, but on full .580 hex or .680 round steel.

Are you an authorized Chicago Pneumatic dealer?

Yes. Crowder Supply is a stocking Chicago Pneumatic construction tool dealer shipping nationwide. Stocking matters more than the title: most of the tools on this page ship the same day, not in six weeks from a factory order.

What size air compressor do I need to run a CP breaker?

Add up the CFM of every tool you plan to run at the same time, then add about 25 percent for hose losses and duty cycle. Size against the compressor’s ACTUAL free air delivery, not its model number: a CPS 110 delivers 95 CFM and a CPS 185 delivers 180 CFM. So a CP 1260 at 63 CFM runs comfortably on the CPS 110; two of them, or a CP 1290 at 81 CFM alongside a chipping hammer, want the CPS 175 or the CPS 185. Our CP portable compressors run 95 to 400 CFM actual across 15 models, up to 1,373 CFM on the high-pressure drilling machines. Full specs and a tool-by-tool sizing table are on the CP air compressors page.

What is the difference between a CP paving breaker and a clay digger?

A paving breaker is built to fracture concrete and asphalt: heavier, slower-cycling, more energy per blow. A clay digger has a longer barrel and runs a clay spade to shear and lift soil, hardpan and frozen ground. Using a breaker in dirt wastes energy and buries the tool; using a clay digger on concrete will not break it. If the material is a mix, most crews buy the breaker and add a spade shank for the dirt work.

Do you carry CP generators, light towers and air dryers?

Yes. The CPPG generators and the CPLT V17 light tower now sell online with published prices, and the CPD 850, 1200 and 1700 desiccant dryers are available on a quote basis — call 1-888-883-5144 for dryer pricing. Multi-unit pricing is available on the generator line.

Which CP rock drill should I buy?

Match the drill to the hole and the air you have. The CP 0009 at 9 lb class and 20 CFM is for shallow anchor holes and light rebar pinning off a small compressor. The CP 0014 (15 lb, 38 CFM) and CP 0022 (30 lb, 56 CFM) cover most utility and foundation work. The CP 0032 (45 lb, 103 CFM) and CP 0069 (60 lb, 130 CFM) are production blast-hole tools and need a CPS 185 or larger to keep up.

What shank or chuck size do I need?

The shank has to match the steel you already own, not the other way around. CP breakers ship in 1 x 4-1/4 in., 1-1/8 x 6 in. and 1-1/4 x 6 in.; sinker drills in 7/8 x 3-1/4 in., 3/4 x 4-1/4 in., 7/8 x 4-1/4 in. and 1 x 4-1/4 in.; construction chipping hammers in .580 hex and .680 round; light-duty air hammers in 0.401 in., 0.498 in., 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. hex. Measure a chisel you have or send us a photo and we will identify it. One thing to know before you order steel: for .580 hex and .680 round we sell our own points and chisels rather than the factory part numbers, in lengths from 8 to 120 in.; for the light-duty air hammers we sell the manufacturer’s SKUs.

Do you stock parts and repair kits for CP tools?

Yes. Wear parts, seal kits, retainers, springs and pistons for the CP construction line are part of our regular stock, and parts orders ship the same day on the same cutoff as machines. Call 1-888-883-5144 with the model and, if you have it, the part number off the old piece.

Gas, pneumatic or hydraulic: which platform should I standardize on?

Pneumatic if you already own or rent a compressor: lowest tool cost, simplest service, widest range. Gas if the work is scattered and remote and towing air to every spot costs more than the tool. Hydraulic if you have a carrier or a power pack, want much lower noise, or need post drivers and post pullers, which have no practical pneumatic equivalent. Most crews end up with pneumatic as the base and one gas or hydraulic tool for the exceptions.

How fast do CP tools ship?

Same Day Shipping on orders by 4 PM Eastern on stocked items. We ship nationwide from our own stock and, on some lines, direct from the manufacturer, so transit times depend on the item rather than on one warehouse. Larger machines such as compressors, generators and light towers ship by freight, and we quote the freight with the machine so there is no surprise at delivery.
